Now, you're doing what (in my opinion) you ought to be doing with these beautiful drums. Experimenting with drum heads and how they are dampened and tensioned can probably get you closer to the sound that you think you want. I also noticed that, when you had the tom on a snare stand, it was positioned very similarly than if it had been on the rail.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
