Time to mix that stuff!

Time is running out so I'm like mixing 3 to 9 songs a day (!), simple stuff take less time. Sound-wise, my favourite tracks are the ones with just double bass, drums and keys. The drums are so smooth and open sounding... very life-like, telling stories with each stroke (or almost).

The Coles 4038 are a dream to work with as they seem to capture the low-end richness of the Bombers so well. Best open drum sound so far!

The snare comes out very well, too, especially when carefully tuned and muffled (I used Moongels), very fat and funky. I just love this snare!

Now, I'm still frustrated with those snare wires that I had to change. I may simply go back to the originals, removing the sizzling ones.

If anyone has a true solution for the wires, please let me know!

I just replaced the drummer of a pretty cool band called Street Lemon (www.streetlemon.com) and yesterday was my first rehearsal with them.

The long boomy kick was a bit over the top - I'll have to find an easy way to control the sustain while gigging.

I did not take enough time to properly tune the snare drum - which was a shame as it could have sounded way better. Next time!

Overall, I need to take a few minutes to tune the kit before each rehearsal as the calf skins need to be loosened when not played.

Otherwise, lots of fun playing those drums in this context.

I also bought an hardcase flight-case for the bass drum as we'll be gigging around from the end of the year, quite bulky!

Now, I'm into trouble.

Playing the Bombers for that record really turned me on to calf skins. Playing plastic heads now feels like making love with a condom ;-)

I've just received 2 16" calf skins for the floor tom. I had to moist and shape them (first time!) and they now fit the shell pretty well. My only concern is that they seem to be too thin and have too much of a ping-y attack. I'm after a duller sound but thicker calf heads don't seem to be that easy to find.

I've playing the Rolling Bomber kit 3 times on stage and had a blast!

I went for a snare plastic head just to minimize any cracking risk.

Moving this kit is so easy as shells are very light due to the wood lugs.

I've now stuck a "Slingerland Radio King" on the bass drum front head: looks cool!

I get questions from fellow drummers or just curious people who find this set very appealing.

Sound-wise, there is a very wide range of possibilities and I'm still in the process of learning how to harness the wild power of those drums.

I installed a vintage damper on the resonnance head but it makes a buzzy noise, so I went for a felt band instead. I have one felt per head on the bass drum. I'm not yet there with this but I'm learning.

I'm realizing how cool and durable calf skins can be.

After a few rehearsals and 3 shows, the Remo head was good for the trash, whereas I've moisted and re-installed the calf skin head on my snare no problem. Wood and skin vs metal and plastic... the eco choice is easy to make!

Overall, it's a joy to play that kit. I've spotted a Ludwig Victory kit from the same era and... I don't know ;-)

I'm surprised this thread has existed for months and only one other commenter besides the OP.

I'll post pictures for sure, even more now that I've found the classiest snare drum flight case on earth ;-)
