My Hoshino Camco

The shells were made by Keller so it would be a case of ordering a 10" tube from Keller. Hoops were also outsourced so it was more of a case of assembling the drum rather than manufacturing it at the Camco factory.

Yes the hoops were outsourced, designed and sized to fit those undersized shells which Keller made specifically for the Camco Drum co. The blueprints for the Keller shells and bearing edges Tama bought in 1977. I don't believe that it was even close to that easy. I don't think they would have drawn up blueprints/ designs for just to commission a couple of drum shells. One thing is for certain. An L.A. era Keller shell with the Camco bearing edges are absolutely unmistakable...

Unfortunately my 10" tom was in such poor shape that the bearing edges were actually gone! The drum was originally Alice Cooper White and it had lugs and hoops but no badge, heads and huge gouges in what was left of the edges. I had the drum repaired twice because the first guy cut the drum out of square. But the vertical grain on the inside looks the same as the 12" tom I used to have.

I doubt there was any paper work done as these were obviously custom jobs. LA Camco like the original George Way Drum Company was very small. Both were also very accessible to the players in their respected areas and were very open to custom work unlike Camco from Oaklawn & Chanute.

Did anyone actually get the chance to talk to the guys at DW about what items from Camco went to Tama/DW?

It's my understanding DW purchased the rights and tooling from Camco to make only hardware.

BTW the Hoshino Camco kits, even if not as collectable, are very well made drums and sound fantastic. I also owned and gigged a beautiful 18/12/14 bop kit for about 5 years. They were great.

You won't see that ever again. The pattern there is an actual inlay not a stain. My bop kit was the exact same finish.

That black and white picture thats on the Rebo ad shows the Tama/Camco kit with an original Camco pedal (5000 model). Anyone else notice that? That might support the theory that The pedals that were already built with the camco name on them, went to Tama, even though DW got all of the tooling to build new pedals
