I'll try to post some pics soon of the bearing edges. I need to study them anyway:)With 6/6ply, I'm assuming you mean maple with 6ply re-rings?Again, regarding the snare I mentioned, have you guys seen any from that period, particularly ones with the single-post (double sided) lugs as the lugs on my 10" tom?
Yes 6ply maple with 6ply maple re-rings 6/6ply. I would love to see the shells when you get a chance to post the pictures. Great looking set and I Love all the different set-ups or kits you can get out of one set. Almost Chameleon like... Dolfan- My mistake, I misread and assumed....I've done an astonishing amount of research on my favorites, the L.A. era these past years even going so far as trying to track down past employees to interview.
Yes definitely 6/6 ply! Interestingly, the inside plies are vertical and divided into a number of (stave-like) sections. 6 total on this 12" tom. Don't know if that's a common practice?
Here are some pics. Btw, what are your thoughts on the snare drum availability?
Those are awesome. Thanks for sharing!
That is the best looking Tama/Camco set i have seen in that rare of a finish.Your shells look to be 6/6 maple Camco shells to me for the L.A. Camco's..About 4 years ago in a goodwill type of store.I got a set of these drums for 80.00 12,13,16,22 they have the same Tama/Camco lugs as your's but the shells are 6 ply with no rings iam not sure of the wood on them because the shell are stain in red inside and out but a funny thing the badge's say RoyalStar on them.....Mikey
That's one lucky find Mikey!
Could you perhaps post some pics?
Wow, awesome set!!
Okay! Let's fire this thread up again...
Dana Bentley, owner of Bentley's Drums, is a friend. He's heading down to the DW factory Thursday for a meeting. I've asked him, and he's agreed, to find out just who got what in the DW / Tama purchase while there.
So stay tuned... I'll be talking with him over the weekend or at his shop next week.

I think Don Lomardi was the only one involved, John Good was on the road teching at the time...Could you also verify that it was Sept. 1977 and not 1978? Could you also ask him to check on the possibility of any 10 toms that were ever made? Lombardi would probably know that. It just seems to me that since all of the L.A. era drum shells had blueprints for their their individual sizes and bearing edges, it would be quite a bit of work to set up the machinery to even make them. Would it have been worth it to make just a couple? Wouldn't we have seen a few of them by now? On a similar note: it took 2 men a full day to readjust the machine to heat and bend 6" heavy walled PVC to make 3, 7' diameter 90s. The machine was set previously for 5' 90s. (90 degree bends) ( 6" PVC for 500KV wire) for the substation I built 3 years ago. And that's my point, the cost would have been astronomical unless Keller was already set up to make undersized 10" shells.
Bad news... one of the people at the DW factory had some accident and the meeting was postponed. Sling; I gave Dana your questions and some of my own. When they re-schedule the meeting I'll post on this again.
