MIJ Stencils use by Professionals

Loading...

Please indulge me and help me prove my point to a fellow drummer and share what I have read on here and on DFO.........

It is not uncommon that I have read how professional drummers are now increasingly using MIJ stencil kits to tour with (and sometimes even to record with). Please share cases such as these as searching for such information would surely by too difficult.

Reasons will vary, though I am just trying to prove that it is happening at all more and more these days.

Thanks in advance.

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I would be interested in hearing instances of that. The marketplace currently is such that endorsements are pretty easy to come by even for upcoming bands. This is because there are so many boutique builders and also companies like Pacific providing those endorsements. In most cases these are not freebie endorsements, but if you have any kind of track record, some company will build a kit at wholesale cost just to add another drummer to their roster and improve their visibility. Drummer's have a hard time passing these deals up because of the allure of saying you have an endorsement. Fair enough all the way around. I think this would make it tough for most artists to justify carrying an MIJ kit. Certainly no technician would be caught dead dealing with that mounting hardware day in and day out. RIMS mounts or snare stands would certainly be in order.

As to recording, that could be. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

Are we talking vintage MIJ kits, correct?

I don't think this would be wise unless you're a soft rock or smooth jazz band.

Zeus is neither soft rock nor smooth jazz. Myself I pound the *crap* out of these drums, no problem.So...bzzzt.Mitch

My 60s Pearl kit could withstand a Bread medley, that's about it.

I was offered an endorsement back in the 90s with either Pearl or Tama, I can't remember. I turned it down because part of the deal was that I'd have to do clinics/workshops for kids and I didn't want to teach them my untaught techniquesSailing2

This album was recorded using my recovered Star kit that cost $30. The snare was a Supra from memory. Only 2 mics on the drums. Hardly Professional as that would imply getting paid:confused: The next album that's nearly complete and also using the 2 mic technique features my old Premiers which are fantastic.

No drums should have to withstand that sort of punishmentExcited

What do you have total into the kit? How much did it cost to recover it? (PM the answer if you desire)

I have since sold the kit to a local song writer who is using it in his studio. The kit owed me about $100. The wrap was a gold sparkle vinyl from a fabric store. The main reason for using the kit to record was it was set up for long periods (a year or so) in the studio, bathed in sun and I didn't want to subject my more precious kits to that punishment. The wrap and my gluing held up well.

I recall seeing that in other threads - great job - that is a beauty! This is the bar stool type stuff, right - same or different from the sparkle-brite, sparklewraps ebay stuff? Thicker shells? Or thinner 3-ply with rings? Painted interiors?

Listening to your album - sounds good. English Tuning.....I get it.
