MIJ Star restoration

Loading...

Hello folks,

I've been at this kit for awhile. I bought the drums online in 2013 and started gathering the needed parts almost immediately. Then life got in the way, as it often does. Well, I'm back at it and am finally taking on the work of the actual restoration and am nearly done with the hunting and gathering phase.

I still need a couple of parts but that's not stopping me now.

Here you'll see that I've disassembled the floor tom and have begun cleaning up the shell and the hardware. I may take to repainting the interior as there is some slight water damage. The drum was super filthy as you may be able to tell from the photo.

btw - Anyone know what this wrap is called?

The 924 lug casings are in decent shape and have shined up nicely. Several of these were missing and were procured from members here - thanks again you guys.

The wrap is called red satin flame (I think). Red satin swirl? Check with Precision or other manufactures. I'm sure it is still being made.

Hey Brian - Yes! Red Satin Flame. $93 bux a sheet at Precision. I'll not be rewrapping at this time but it's nice to know it's out there. If I did rewrap I think I'd go with Marmalade as I'm a sucker for orange. Golly that's a beautiful wrap. Thanks!

Hey, Doug!

Glad to help! I've been restoring these old Stars for years and love the process. My kit is listed in Ralf's site as well as our own picture section under "Vintage Stars in Turquoise sparkle" (or something like that). I'm pretty sure that Krylon gray undercoating is very near the grey interior paint if you're thinking of re-painting. Also, are you okay with hardware? I may be able to help. Best of luck, Doug. Please keep me informed of your progress!

Or you could use that special grey Galvanized steel paint (like Gretsch uses) also cheap and available at any hardware store.:D

Keep fixing them up...
