... So are you saying Ralf that these originally had Star badges on them? the ft has a 'K' in a circle stamped inside, that is the only mark I could find. ...

Star badges or stencil badges (see: my website).

I've noticed the 'K' in other Star made shells as well.

Not to p% on anybody's parade here, and I know there's some overlap of brandnames on the MIJ stuff, but I just bought the EXACT same kit in blue satin WITH tags, and it's definitely Apollo; made by Pearl. Late 60's in to 70's, depending on hardware. That is all.

Apollo badge with the wording 'World's Supreme Quality' = definitely Star made,

Apollo badge without any other words = definitely Pearl made.

@Mookie: please kindly send us pics (as Drummerjohn333 already mentioned).

Here's the bass drum with the rail and Apollo badge. Hasn't been cleaned yet, but I did re-glue the seam on the bottom already.

By the way, I'd been led to believe Apollo drums were Pearl-made; my mistake. All I really wanted to say was that the white drums pictured earlier were Apollo; I stand semi-corrected.

Sorry Mookie, but Apollo was a distributor brand name of St. Louis Music Supply. When Star got out the stencil business in 73 (to re-launch as TAMA), Pearl did build for SLMS for a while longer, but they could not take the constant downgrading of product by Pearl in order to better situate the Pearl brand.

Jonnistix, nice to have you around here (should I say: again?) !

Noticed that you didn't come by often in the past: hope you're doing well ?!

@Mookie: would love to see a pic of the set once it's ready again!

I'll post some pics as I can. I'd be pleased to get opinions on approximate era they were made once I get some better photos. Also, does anyone possibly know if the HH cymbals I got with it (Super, West Germany made) would've maybe come with them? Yeah, I know, pictures... But maybe SLM also carried those? Thanks.

You asked for pics: took these at a gig last night. They look great from 5' or more away, especially with lights on them, but up close you can see the scratches and scuffs. Pretty sure they'd never seen the inside of a case before last night. Anyway, they're cleaned and re-assembled and actually sounded pretty good! The floor tom is the "Star" of the set; rack tom is a little muted on that clip mount... Might open up a bit on a snare stand or with a RIMS mount. Also, all new and matched heads might help, but I used what I had around to keep costs down. Used a wooden hoop I had lying around to get them up and running. I might dig up a matching wood hoop for the other side rather than bother finding another metal hoop to match; opinions? I have a Premier Super Ace I recovered years ago in Blue Satin Flame that'll match, but it wasn't ready to go last night, so I dragged out the Ludwig Standard seen in the photos. Got two snares with the set, both no-name chrome jobs (1 MIJ, 1 MIT) that I plan to sell to offset the cost of the kit. Also, some misc hardware, a homemade cymbal case and a blue-sparkle MIJ 13" tom with no name. All for the Princely sum of $30 on Craigslist. That was no typo- thirty dollars. Can anyone give me confirmation on year of manufacture for the set? I guess around 1970. The HH stand I got seems to match up with the catalog pics elsewhere on this site (which is also where I got the [incorrect] notion these were made by Pearl.) These have grey-painted interiors and seem to be of 8-ply construction. Pleasantly surprised with the quality of the hardware/plating; previous MIJ experience (years ago) was much cheaper crap.
