Thanks everyone! My daughter is in middle school and has been playing about a year. The shells were originally green sparkle but the old owner tried some nasty stuff to remove the white enamel paint and ruined the wrap on the 13" tom. I also think the old owner used this with the bottom heads off as the bearing edges were pretty mangled up. We ended up stripping the old wrap, truing up the bearing surfaces and then cutting new edges. I have a wood shop here so it was not too big a problem. When we bout it it was the shells and a box full of hardware and we went from there. Here's what the floor tom looked like:http://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/slingerland5.jpgNotice that the old owner went so far as to use enamel primer too! The kick drum had a thick coat of paint inside and out:http://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/slingerland6.jpgHere's another shot of the completed kit from behind:http://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/slingerland2.jpgHere's a couple of shots with the heads off. I tried to match that cocoa color inside paint as best I could and spray it lightly:http://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/slingerland3.jpghttp://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/slingerland4.jpgNow I just need to find some COB hoops for the bottom of the toms. I was really surprised by how deep and full this set sounds. Better sounding than any modern set I've had. I think I'm hooked!Steve

Steve,

After seeing these pics, I see what you really mean about all the hard work.

You and your daughter have done a fantastic job on restoring a trashed kit

to it's former glory.

Congrats to both of you, well done Bowing

Hope she keeps on playing them and loving them, well done man !!

Cheers Stevo.

Hi Steve, I just came across this thread and wanted to say nice job saving those Slingerland drums. The fact that you and your daughter worked on them together is a wonderful story in its self. I just picked up some Slingerland shells for next to nothing and I am in the proccess "saving" them. I have never owned or played a Slingerland drum set and looking forward to hearing them. Your before and after pictures really got me excited for my projec. I love the wrap choice you made, thats a decision to make.

Once again, nice, no, spectacular job!

Thanks for all the nice words guys! It really was a great help to have a second set of hands when wrapping these guys. We figured that the date on these were either 1967 or 1966 since the interior of the shells were painted cocoa brown but the kit had the early double tom holder. All the serials are in the 173,xxx range. Sound about right? Sizes are 12,13,16,20 which I couldn't see in any catalogs before 1969 so we're not sure if it was pieced together or what.

Isn't it fun trying to pinpoint a year of manufacturing with out a date stamp inside? I wonder, do new drums have a better system for keeping track of when they were made. Sure would be nice to have a date stamp on every drum but then again its kinda fun to try and figure it out.

Outstanding job on those and a great project to do with your daughter. The interiors look really good and satin / flame finishes were very much associated with Slingerland and Gretsch drums. Did you glue or tape the wrap?

Thanks! We glued them but I agonized over it for about a week.
