Mid-60's Ludwig Mod Orange Downbeat Project

Loading...

I was finally able to piece together enough time to finish this project off. Constructed out of a 1965 Ludwig 14 x 20 Kick Drum that had the silver sparkle wrap painted over, a mid-60's 8 x 12 Ludwig Clubdate shell and a 14 x 14 mid-60's Ludwig Clubdate shell. I ended up converting the 12" to fit mini-lugs and the 14 x 14 to fit Large Classic Lugs. I know this is sacrilegious to some, and normally I'm the same, but this was a much more affordable route to get this era of drum in these sizes, and they were all project shells to begin with.

After a bit of paint on the interiors and some sanding, I was able to apply the Mod Orange wrap. They are now perfect for The Doors band that I play in!

I'll hopefully be able to put up a video in the very near future with how this thing sounds. I'm loving it so far!

woah! personally i reckon thats super cool!

re: the 14" floor tom - i notice that the spacing for the large classic lugs looks pretty correct. Did you have to plug the clubdate holes, then redrill large classic holes? or do the clubdate holes correspond to large classic lug holes in some way?

great stuff!

That's a sweet bit of work there. Very nice save. A wonderful use for trashed shells.

One question:

I noticed the placement of the bass spurs is off. They appear to be high and mid vice lower and forward. It would seem that the spurs would not be as likely to "hold" or "grip" the forward force as they are stretched, so to speak. Is that the case?

I ask because I had purchased a 20 bass from a gent who had mounted the spurs in about that position and I had a dickens of a time with them holding. I had to sell the bass. Drove me nuts.

That's a good question! I ended up just using the holes that were already drilled into the shell for the spurs, and so I never even thought to double-check whether they were in the appropriate place. They looked to be, so I didn't give it a second thought. I ended up checking out quite a few photos of other downbeat kits after reading your comment, and from what I can tell, they seem to be in the right spot compared to others. They certainly do look far more centered in the photos I've put up, but they're definitely more towards the front of the drum. I ended up baptizing them in fire with a rock group I play in last night, and they held their place just fine the whole time without issue, despite the thrashing. I'll be mindful of it though, as I've had an issue with these kind of spurs slipping every once in a while in the most blue of moons and going lopsided.

Good to know. Glad it was just a photo-mojo-bobo. ;)

Ya gotta love snagging those trashed shells and using them for incredible projects like this. Dang. Seriously cool. Great job!
