Ludwigs in black paint?

Loading...

Hey everyone. Been recently watching a sale that has this drum for sale. https://i.imgur.com/2ZYfFcT.png

Which I'm definitely interested, as it appears to be like a 1964 Ludwig snare. However, going through the catalogs, I can't seem to find any evidence that they offered drums in just black paint. Can anyone tell me anything about that as a finish? Is it probable someone just painted over a wrap or did Ludwig do custom colors?

Anyone know what it might be worth?

Thanks!

Yes, black was offered. I own one. Usually they're flaking and chipping paint and at this point and need repainting or retouching.

Thanks BEC. Any idea what they're worth? Is it in the same price range of just an average Jazz fest?

It's buried in the fine print but you could get any color lacquer you wanted sprayed on your shells, you just had to provide a sample and presumably Ludwig would take it to the paint store and get a can of DuPont Duco made up in that color. Of course there were the standard colors like Black, blue, etc. and the various two tone combinations with the silver or gold (usually) band sprayed around the middle.

That`s a well kept one and high end of 60`s Pioneers. Highest end.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Maybe it's the pic, but that doesn't look like an original black duco. Looks refinished, but it's not a good pic, so I might be all wet.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it appears to have 8 lugs, wouldn't that be a Jazz Fest, not a Pioneer?

And finally I have made the connection as to why those finishes are referred to as Duco. I never really had thought about that one.

@Ron_M, just for you, here's a closer picture of the finish. https://i.imgur.com/6cIlZxn.png

That looks like a do-it-yourself job - too clean with crisp reflections.

Once upon a time I bought a home made Ludwig microkit (10/12/16 kick) from 80s shells with a black snare. This was about all the detail I had:

When it arrived it became clear that the snare was a Jazz Festival in all original condition except for a DIY coating of black paint. Pre serial number date stamp Nov 18, 1963 -- just before the JFK assassination.

After playing it for some months I got brave and decided to return it to whatever finish it was. Underneath was a pristine WMP which had not faded because it had not been exposed to UV light.

So you can't be sure until you have hands on, and sometimes you get a nice surprise.

@Zen

What was your process for removing the paint without hurting the wrap? Had you seen the wrap underneath it when the rims were off? What gave it away?
