Todays find, Holy Grail......

Ludwig Super COB SuperSensitive 14x5....I have looked for this drum for a very long time and today finally found one for sale. From what I understand this are some specifications.

• Triple chrome plated brass shell

• Brass hoops

• Heavy walled imperial lugs

• Pre serial number Keystone badge

• Crimped snare beds

• Curled inward flange at bearing edge

• P-4067 Red baseball batt tone control ( Ludwig started to use these in 1962 and for a few years into the SuparPhonic until March 1965)

A real rarity in mint condition. No pitting , good solid work. This was a super sensitive prototype for what was coming later from Ludwig....

Value....Priceless....

Someone added a muffler. It's ruined,...holy sh*t !! Not holy grail......

There's no cat mention of that being an option. A muffler would degrade the sensitivity,.....Right ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

While small round knob tone controls were more common, you will also see a fair number of pre-serial COB in 1962-63 period with baseball bat mufflers. So not a disqualification on that basis.

So that is what they look like! My brothers super sensitive needs some work. Mark Fenberg is helping me with one, a later one. This drum is really a beaut!:cool:

Just searched the internet and found images of three different super sensitives, all with the baseball bat muffler. If I had spent more time I'm guessing I could have found more. I think mufflers were standard, not options. I doubt they were added in by owners later on. I had one built in to my circa 1963-1965 supraphonic, but it's been so many years, I'm no longer sure whether it had a baseball bat or a round knob.

Well you at least think they would mention it as a feature or option. If anyone goes to verify it by cat. they wont find it mentioned at all. Then the cast doubt thing happens. It looks factory to me, screw under was the older,...But I can't find it listed or mentioned in a Ludwig cat. Maybe it's a 61 proto like he said and I'm simply confirming it by accident. It's not standard or it would be right there between the throw and badge.

Did they specifically mention the presence of mufflers installed in wooden snare drums in that catalog? To the best of my knowledge, most, if not all, wooden snares came with mufflers installed. It wasn't an option, although I assume if you had one built specifically for you, you might have been able request that you didn't want one. The circa 1962 Jazz Festival purchased last year from BEC has a muffler.

Two owners before me. Bought and kept in its original state. This drum came originally with red felt baseball bat muffler. Ludwig started to use the red felt baseball muffler in 1962.
