Ludwig Standard Granitone Questions

Good point KC. The interior in that last pic you just posted looks like the same interior paint as my floor tom pictured. It's almost a flat matte grey versus granitone

It had serial number 21321.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

So, does anyone have a suggestion on what to use for a decent, good enough, version of the Granitone paint?

Yes, I realize that this thread is ancient.

Thanks!

I take it that it's nothing really that special, just about how it looks?

Are you re-coating existing shells that have granitone paint? If so, you could take a shell to your paint supply store for them to match it...

Cheers

I remember reading that Ludwig used plain old white fence paint.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Gretsch's "Silver Sealer" is galvanized fence paint.

Rogers used what is known in the paint trade as trunk paint. I don't think that there is any real mojo to the type of paint that any of the drum manufacturers used. It's effing paint.

There are several makers of trunk paint that comes in a spray can. That is the only way to apply that type of splatter finish. Ludwig, being Ludwig, would use whatever they could get their hands on. They just bought trunk paint from whatever their local supplier had available that was being supplied to automakers who were spraying their trunks with it.

A quick Google search for trunk paint reveals many options.

There is actually still a product called zolocoat but you would have to have a compressor and spray gun to apply it. Something in a spray can will probably be your best bet.

There may be a current product that is an exact match or very close or you might just have to find the closest match you can and live with it.
