Ludwig Standard Granitone Questions

From KCDrumDad

Some stats for everyone:There are 494 wood shelled Standard drums in my database for which I have recorded information about their interior finish.73 have Reso-Cote interiors401 have Granitone interiors12 have wrap to match their exteriors4 have Clear interiors4 have been painted red or black to cover whatever finish they had from the factoryThe Reso-Cote tend to be drums with lower serial numbers, but Granitone is also well represented. Clear interiors tend to be higher serial numbers.

I love the minutia of vintage drums! Thanks KC!

Thanks again KC. So it is a bit of an out lier that it has a mahogany interior. Has anyone refinished the interior of a Luddy standard and found a granitone paint that matched? or should I just leave it Mahagany since the rack and snare interior are a different original paint from the floor tom anyway. The bare mahogany does look kinda nice. What do you guys think as far as finishing the restoration?

I am restoring a Ludwig Standard Gold Strata kit and came across 2 different types of grey paint interiors. The 13 inch rack is more like the Granitone I have on my other Ludwig Standard from the same time period and the 16 inch floor tom has more of a flat chalky grey paint. Has anyone else come across this in the past? Both are original interior paints and are date stamped. Oh and more importantly where can I find either type of paint to repaint the interior of the kick drum. I had to strip it down to the wood because someone painted it black. Another interesting note is that the interior ply of the kick is mahogany not maple. I thought the 3 plies during this time period were Maple Poplar Maple not Mahogany. Anyone else seen this before? Thanks in advance for your help!

The bass drum is a something over a Mahogany finish The date stamp will bleed through and turn onto the top. It`s ink, and that`s what ink does under stain or paint unless you stain kill it.

The other two are Ben Moore what I think is called trunk paint. I am just using memory here, there are members that know from touring the plant. Hang in they will probably see this thread.

But that BD has an original Mahogany finish.

Yeah. The kit was born together and they are all Gold Strata Wrap. Definitely a mahogany interior on the kick. The kick was originally a granitone that matched the rack and snare. The more common granitone you see on these drums. All of the original finish stripped away when I removed the black spray paint someone used on interior of the kick.

If they had white coat heads, you can`t see inside anyways.

Hold on for the correct paint, that knowledge is here.

Is that the Combo badge, because that would explain a lot.

Thanks again KC. So it is a bit of an out lier that it has a mahogany interior.

I honestly cannot say if this is an outlier. I have recorded the interior finish that is visible, so generally see Reso-Cote or Granitone and do not know what is beneath them.

Here is a picture of a drum with an atypical interior finish, but this drum had suffered many changes, including having its Ruby Strata wrap painted black. A reinforcing ring is missing. I think that some of the spots pictured are from mold, but it could just be from a sloppy paint job. There is a date stamp on the interior, so the finish appears to be original.
