Ludwig marine white pearl 64 super-common? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

I am soooo close to finally buying a kit...I know I said this four days ago! But really I am.

Okay: Have a shot at buying a 1964 marine white pearl Ludwig Super Classic. It's very very minty, brilliant white interiors, COB hoops, and the price for the 3 pieces is 900. My questions are:

Does MWP sometimes turn yellow, or vanilla, and that determines how "nice" the finish is? Is MWP equally as common as blue sparkle in that era? I guess I'm trying to determine if there's really no "collectable" factor between MWP and blue sparkle.

The finish on the kit is definitely more vanilla/light creme than yellow.

Thank you AS ALWAYS for your opinions!!

White-Marine-Pearl or WMP is often known for turning various shades of yellow. Some even turn a kind of greenish color. A few seem to escape the fade altogether.

The Super Classic configuration is the most common configuration Ludwig ever sold.

WMP is sometimes considered an "old guy" finish. It's often associated with Buddy Rich.

It is a pretty common finish, but really clean examples are harder to come by.

I'm not crazy about WMP, generally. It just doesn't do it for me. Although, I do like some examples that have turned more yellow. Go figure! Car Driving2

Edit: And...there is always a collectible value to any vintage Ludwig drum set in nice shape because they are truly American-made instruments.

The wmp is not as common as blue sparkle but it's close, the wmp does have a tendency to turn yellow because the older wrap material is cellulose based as opposed to the newer wrap being petroleum based, the price is still steep though, just take a little more time. with the economy more kits are coming to the market, at better pricing, mark

Yes, but $900 for a nice WMP isn't a bad price at all. And he's going to have to start somewhere. The COB hoops are a nice bonus. Original condition -all stamps and badges matched, etc. At this point, if the set is really nice, it will hold that value and likely increase in value when the economy returns. All the drum sets he is considering have been very nice.

You do have to consider the hardware.

The proper pedals, stands, etc. will likely add up quickly -unless you're not concerned with complete originality. I factor each extra piece of hardware at about $100 per piece. Most of the time, i do better than that, but that budget gives me some wiggle room. That is:

2 flat base cymbal stands = 200

1 snare stand = 50-100

1 SpeedKing pedal = 50-100

1 Spurlok hi-hat = 50-100

And, of course, you will want a Supra = 150-350

Yes, but it is still high, after you factor in just the hardware, less the cymbals you are going towards $2000.00 ouch!!!! no offense but for 2k man you can get almost any vintage kit on the planet, i'll sell him a kit for 2k, i still say take your time it will come,

I know. But, at the same time, have you ever held a gun that was ready to shoot? That's the way it always was for me when I was after a drum set. I bought a few that I could have made better deals on, but some of the sets just called out to me...."buy me!". And, even on the sets that I bought that I paid slightly too much for, I either was able to sell for even money at worst -or I kept them and still am glad to have them at any price!

He could hold out for a better deal -yes. But he wants some drums. he's got a loaded gun! Storm Trooper And like I say, the game has to begin somewhere!

It sounds like a good deal to me. It's very easy to spend that much on odds and ends needed to complete a fixer-upper.

The last question:

Should I just ignore this kit, when compared to the others? That color, I freakin' love it because it's kinda kool...but I doubt it's as "valuable" as the other two I'm sweating over....
