Ludwig Classic Lugs-Different Sizes on Toms?

Loading...

Greetings,

I recently happened into some Keystone Era Ludwigs (more about them later). 12/13/16/22 with an extra 20" bass drum in Blue Sparkle.

If you notice in the attached picture, the lugs are larger on the 13 and 16 but smaller on the 12. Was that standard operating procedure for Ludwig, or is the 12 from a slightly different era (although they are all keystone badges with re-rings and white "Resocoat" interiors).

I can get the serials off each tom if need be, but just wanted to find out more.

Thanks!

V

yes, the 12" made with smaller lugs than 13" and larger drums.

Ludwig did use the small lug on 12" toms for quite some time. It did look a bit out of place when placed next to the 13" tom on a dual-tom kit, so Ludwig eventually changed to large lugs on the 12" tom. When I ordered my Classic Maple Downbeat kit, I chose to go with the small lugs on the 12" tom. I'm not at home right now, so can't attach pictures!

Ludwig toms, 12" and under, used the smaller lugs for at least 30 years (early 1950s to early 1980s) so that is definitely the "normal" setup on a vintage set. The small lugs also appeared on all sizes of concert toms, double lugged snare drums, and marching drums. Last I knew the smaller size lug is the default for all modern Ludwig upper tier drums although you can order the larger lugs if you desire at a small upcharge.

I guess I'm too used to the way most vintage sets look because those large lugs look odd to me on a 12". Too big for the drum. Maybe on a power tom that diameter but on an 8" deep drum they look to just barely fit.

Guess it wasn't as well thought-out on their part (pun)

Ludwig going back and forth

on the lug size

isn't a good look

Doesn't even look like the Classic Ludwig Drum set
