something i never hear anything about...i bought a new ludwig chrome wrap kit in 1974 from the king james drum store window.. 2 24s 10 x 14 12x 15 16x 18....and a 5.5 x14 snare....these shells are made of white fiberglass...not wood or speckled concert tom material....white fiberglass with a seam inside that looks like a welders welding puddle running the length of the shell from top to bottom...later on i heard they stopped making them because they could'nt perfect the seams...i still have the set....anyone else ever hear of this?

Wotchagot there is a set of white Vistalites.

Same as the see-thru stuff but opaque in the case of white. They did 'em in solid black, too.

Given the sizes and the sonic nature of Vistalite, that kit would be considered a weapon if used in the context of music on the more aggressive end of things.

I bet it's majestic to see.

Far as the chrome wrap goes, that's rather puzzling, unless they were covered later...

OR...another not-impossibility is that the kit was a special-order or Ludwig experimental thing (it's happened before) where they wanted to take advantage of the acoustic properties of Vistalite but with different finishes. It'd make sense for them to use the opaque Vistalite colors for that because the inside would CERTAINLY look better than if they'd used clear or whatever. Otherwise, you'd see the glue.

OR...it could just be an aftermarket covering job (most likely).

An email to Jim Catalano may prove helpful.

Got any pix?

Ludwig sold vistalite sets covered in chrome wrap. I am not sure of the catalog numbers are or what years they did it.

I thought I've heard that Ludwig covered the white and black Vistalites in chrome to get the drums out the door since the solid Vistalite colors weren't selling.

Interesting! That listing says it was chrome over clear shells. So it was more than just the solid black and white.

I don't think the quality of the research backing the claims in the eBay listing is as good as the quality of research on this site. Or at least, without proper references I can't tell.

Is there really such a thing as Ludwig "stainless steel wrap" or are we talking the chrome-o-wood I'm familiar with?

I had a late 70's maybe 1980 b/o badge kit chrome over 6 ply wood with the riveted seams and that wrap was metal, and those drums were heavy as hell.

Ludwig covered a bunch of solid black and solid white vistalite shells in chrome - because those two colors weren't selling.

Here's a shot of a chrome over white vistalite kit I had about four years ago. And yes, HEAVY, LOUD drums!
