What brands of strainer are you talking about?

I think a P85 is the same hole spacing, or you could get an Inde universal with sliding screws. Measure the hole distance and check DFD. They have several models that should fit. But yeah, drilling is a big no-no to maintain the age/vintage integrity and collectability. I had an Inde strainer on mine until I finally came across a real Kent throw just last week. They’re tough to find but they are out there.

I have a Kent strainer. It's a bit tweaked and missing the snare string clamping bracket. I think that part is still on yours? If you'd like to experiment with my strainer, you can have it for the cost of Priority Mail shipping... $7.80! If interested, I can take some pictures later today and post them. Let me know!
