Ludwig-dude - Please don't think I was pointing a finger at you or anybody else. It seemed more like the sum of all of our replies might have this underlying issue but I might be looking to deep. I apologize if my remarks insulted anyone!:)
Oh no worries....I was just stating how I roll with the forum when it comes to purchases....no harm, no foul in my book. :D
Another point of view:
I generally find it much more valuable when somebody tells me what THEY would pay for an item in question, assuming THEY had a reasonable interest. This seems much more attached to reality than when somebody PREDICTS what an item might fetch in the open market.
Of course, an Appraisal (based on comparable sales) is even better, but if everyone offered an opinion based on their OWN perceived value for the item, some of the 'hit and run' feelings might be avoided.
In any case, I would have no qualms about telling somebody that IF I WERE IN THE MARKET I might honestly consider paying $800 to $1000 for said Jazz Fest snare drum WITHOUT regard to what somebody else might (or even did) pay!!
If the newbie can't sell it for that much, it's certainly not a reflection on my expertise. And, if the newbie then sells the item for more than I would've paid... Good for them!

As a new member to this forum who has shared on the forum my recent vintage-kit garage sale find (for $35.00!), I cannot but help but feel this topic is directed a little toward me. I appreciate the information I have found in some of the posts on this board, including current market value for similar drum kits. However, I have never asked the monetary value of my garage sale find of anyone one on this board. Because I plan on keeping this kit, much to my wife's chagrin (as a full-time professional player for 30+years, I have a basement filled with drums, cases, cymbals, etc...), value is a relative thing. When I found this site, I was excited to see a community that shared the same enthusiasm as I do toward the art and manufacture of drums and was excited to share with others that would "get" what I was talking about. It seems, maybe people on here should stop taking it so seriously and just enjoy being in a community where knowledge can be shared...

Not knowing much about the value of 95% of the items that get asked about around here leads me to a flip side on this topic, Mikey......That dude you gave a price quote to may use that info in a way that is hurtful to you.That's not your fault, and there's not a thing you can do about that.... except stop being generous and helpful in that way.But I think that all the other folks that benefit from you sharing that info far outweighs that one other guy. Yeah, he's getting the benefit right now, cause he's got the item right now..... but sometime later, there's a good chance that a lot of other folks will be able use that bit of info also.And..... you just wouldn't be the Mikey we all dig if you changed ....:)
Hey Kevin's,Ia'm not going to change,i love taking about vintage drum's you know after 35+ year's and i still can't stop..But my posting was more about the newer member's asking What it's worth is what get's to me,sometime's i get emails anywere from 4-6 from the same person asking on the same drum or set What's it worth..So the way it is now i think i will only reply to post from member's who have been on this forum for some time,I just will not reply to new member's anymore or tell them to check Ebay and if the drum maker has a web site tell them to go check it out....Mikey

I can relate Mikey.....I used to get emails all the time on this stuff....I don't get many anymore, at least since I've publicly posted my stand on the subject anyway. It gets annoying after a while and it just fills up my email....also it opens your email account for possible tons of spam email later on from people who like to do that as well.....
