Or have others noticed that 60s-70's MIJs are getting more expensive and harder to find. Is the whole vintage drum world starting to evesdrop on our MIJ threads here?

I'm trying to find ratty sets to restore and haven't seen a reasonable one pop up in my area in months. I used to buy 3 and 4 pieces MIJ shellpacks for $50-80 all the time. But now they are always closer to $150 or more, even ratty ones in need of restoration. What gives?

well yes, as it looks that way, some of them like the kent line, are almost like gretch shells so there are a oldy but goody

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I check Craigslist all the time and have not found anything in a long while either in SoCal, either. Damn hipsters must be buying up all the cool vintage kits!

I have alluded to this effect, knowing it was coming. The internet and forums (those darn forums) are to blame as most (wise) people are finding it easy to research their basement/attic drumset before they go to sell it. It is a bit ironic, as without this forum, I would still be in the dark to a certain degree.

Indeed it takes a considerable amount of time combing through CL ads and garage sales, etc. to discover these now. It has become significantly more rare, and when I discover one, I indeed get excited. Strange though - as sometimes you score big when on this hunt. I once scored VERY big - got a whole lot of vintage MIJs - and even other stuff to sell off. I think I made all my money back in about a week and was left with 2 shell packs of MIJ bliss!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Well, Kents are not MIJs, Kents were made in the USA by an ex-Gretsch employee so that's probably why the shells are similar. But if you ask me, that's where the similarity ends, the Kents I've seen have pretty shoddy workmanship. I would not put them in the same league even with old MIJs much less Gretsch

Indeed, the international available information about MIJ kits via 'www' are open to everyone. But I found out that not all people are trying to go into deep, as it is time wasting - and who has sufficient time nowadays?). And those are the chances, which still come up from time to time.

I waited three months now for a bargain, and it came up just yesterday ;-)

I believe that there are still many cheap kits to come our way (not only in Germany).

kents were later made in japan in the late 60's timeline I think..

This might explain why he was an ex-Gretsch employee.

Find a Kent kit for cheap, fix the flat edges and clean up the interiors. These 2 ply shells will sing when you're done.
