Identification...Ludwig Thermogloss Over Natural Mahogany?

Loading...

I just bought a Ludwig kit which I think is Thermogloss Over Natural Mahogany. Sizes are , 22 / 12 / 13 / 16

B/O badges with serial numbers 936xxx

What type of lugs are used : Streamline?

12 and 13 tams are white paint interior. Bass drum and 16 floor toms are natural finish inside. I appears that the shells are 1 or 2 ply Mahogny. All shells have reinforcement rings.

I hope the pictures is good enough quality...

From that one picture, it looks like the shells might have been stripped of their original wrap or paint and sanded (possibly stained) before being clear lacquered. I

may be wrong about this . But, it looks like that to me.

I do believe Ludwig had a Mahogany finish.

IMO: I'm w/Leedybdp, appears to be peeled and stained, although it's difficult to determine from one pic.

Yes agree it would be better with more pictures.

Maybe picture with head off and the edges.

It does look a lot lighter then the catalog picture for sure.

Nice looking kit by the way.

leedybdp is correct. That's a refinished set. Nothing like that ever left the Ludwig factory.

You can clearly see that the grain is not that of mahogany...but, in fact, is the outer maple-ply of a classic 3 ply Ludwig shell from the 60's. None of the Parallelogram badged drums should have a white-painted interior.

Thanks for the reply´s , The drums originally came from New Orleans, imported to Norway 30 years ago...they have always had the mahogany finish. I dont think the wrap has been removed, the shells are original solid mahogany.

These drums are not red mahogany stain or mahogany cortex. They are solid Mahogany shells. Thermogloss over natural mahogany...

A similar set is being sold at Reverb. Same shell sizes

OK. If that's what you say, and someone who wants to buy the drums agrees with you, you should both be happy. I'll just cordially disagree with your opinion.

There were NO parallelogram badged drums that came with a white painted interior. That's the absolute dead giveaway that the drums are not original.

The grain pattern is NOT mahogany. That grain is maple. They are DEFINITELY NOT solid mahogany shells in any way, shape or form. Absolutely not.
