Well, fogive me if this sounds bold but I really think that Spakle Wrap, contact paper and wall paper is a huge waste of time. If your going to experiment, why not get some PSA veneer. Stick it on and clear coat it. You will waste time and money spraying contact paper or the cheep wrap with lacquer. Wood always looks good. Heck you wouldnt even have to lacquer it, just get some oil and rub it on. Some guys on here have produced amazing/beautiful results with oil finishes. You have no money in these, spend a little and do it right. Hope this dont make you feel bad or angry, I wasn't going for that, its just my oppinion.

Hey Jeff,
Well please excuse me if this sounds offensive - not my intention here. Your suggestion makes complete sense to me, coming from you! You are the wood guru and enthusiast. Yes, I agree that some wood veneers are beautiful. At the same time it is not at all what I am going for. The only way I would ever do so was if I also installed wood hoops on every drum. While that could be cool, it is not something I would do - just not my taste. Perhaps I will acquire it someday, but not something I want to do with this one.
Thanks for the idea though! I would not be surprised if someday I did go this veneer route with wood hoops.

John, I just wanted to give you my opinion. I’m sorry if I presented it poorly, I never intend to insult anyone or anything like that. I guess I was trying to suggest a different idea but did it in a negative way. My apologies to you! Please keep us up to speed on the project, I find it very interesting and that is the very reason for taking part in your thread.
Thank you!

Oh you didn't present it poorly at all. Not offended at all Jeff! I appreciate your ideas and especially your enthusiasm for the thread. I hope that this thread serves as a collection of ideas for many to refer to later, as well as educational for the ideas discussed. I am a bit concerned about clear coating an already shiny (untacky?) surface. I suppose I will cross that bridge once I decide what color/design to go with. Please stay tuned as I will likely need your expertise later on this specific challenge.
Thanks!

Find a project MIJ FT for this kit.
You should just hold onto that Slingerland shell until someone needs it. Someone will be real mad at you sooner or later when they have to remove your custom job to save a SlingerLeedy shell!!! Kiss
Aaron
Aaron,
This Slingerland shell has a bit of ply separation that will need to be glued/clamped. Not a big deal, sure I can do it. I just thought I would mention that because.....
Dude, if you want to trade me a 16 inch MIJ floor tom shell, 3 ply with re-rings, in round, no damage; and are willing to pay for both our shipping to do so - no problem; but I am not putting a dime into that when I already have a shell that will work fine. Of course it would be nice if the lug holes match the Slinger imitation lugs I have for the project, which is one reason this Slinger shell works so well. In the future, there will be no problems with anyone stripping off my 'wrap' job as this will go over the existing wrap, which is toast anyway - a satin that has been painted. These Slinger shells are not that scarce. It may be Slinger/Leedy, but I understand that is no different than a Slinger of its time.
Oh yeah - there is no badge on it either.

Hey John; Cool. I just got a hold of a couple of nice old Premier shells that I'm looking to do a complete makeover on myself - far from original condition, but nice shells.
Thought I'd toss my latest experiment into the mix here. Not the nicest original finish on this nice old 90s Power Classic Maple, (?) kit, but sounds great, and in otherwise excellent shape, (no badges). Based this on some artwork I was trying a couple of years ago. I'd previously had an opportunity to scrounge a bit in a local print shop that was closing down, and picked up several rolls of mystery material, one of which was this light, blue/grey vinyl material, about the same thickness, and texture as regular drum wrap. Had barely enough for the job, but I think it should suffice. Paintwork was done with oil based, rust paint, as I found it to be the best texture for this application - vinyl sheets cut, and laid flat. Not sure how it'll go over, but I think it's kinda cool. Don't ask me what the vinyl is - all I know is that it's white on the other side, with moisture sensitive adhesive of some kind. Just have some grommets to take care of, and the kit should be ready to go. Will take some shots when I have it set up.

Hey! Those look really sweet! I like that... kind of an 80's look. Nice.

So are you going to clear coat over that?
