Sparklebrite is peel 'n' stick film. It leaves behind quite a mess if you peel it off after it's been stuck down. I've used it for shields on bass drum heads (cut with an exacto knife) and it works well for that. That's really more what it's meant for (used by the sign industry).
Ideas for a 'wrap' job...... Last viewed: 15 hours ago
I'll jump into this one as well...
I exchanged a number of communiques with the Sparklebrite guy in Bakersfield a couple of years ago. I didn't use it, but an acquaintance of mine was looking for something to wrap his sons kit on the cheap. I did some quick research for the guy, and at the time, the wrap was a bit over fifty bucks for a four piece.
I've seen the kit a few times, the last time being a couple months back. It looks fine, for what it is. It's stuck over a set of mismatched shells with new matching lugs (Pearl). The orange Sparklebrite stuff is doing fine... a bit pulled around the floor tom lugs, but not bad.
As a caveat: The kit has NEVER left his boys room, and has NO direct sunlight from the window.
When I was emailing the Bakersfield Sparklebright guy (he's only two hours south from here) he was very friendly, informative, and pulled no punches about his product. He agreed, keep it out of direct sun and excess heat. At the time, he hadn't been selling it long, and had no idea how it would hold up if used on a gigging kit. I didn't press the issue, since I knew the kit would be in an eleven year old boys bedroom.
The other thread got me to wondering how the drawer liner faux marble I mentioned held up. I saw the guy out mowing his lawn yesterday, so I asked. He led me into his garage, and up on a high shelf sat the little kit of 'First Act' drums he'd used for a display in his business (not a music biz). The darn things looked great! He did ask if I wanted 'em back. I passed...
One thing about the 'First Act' drawer liner kit: It uses a center lug on all the drums. The 'pull' on the drawer liner material would seem to be more even since it's only in the middle of the surface. Also, I just barely tightened the heads... playable, but nearly loose.
John,
My thoughts and prayers also go out to that orphan Slingerland FT.
How nice is it? Worth finding a project BD and tom to give you a reason to use a proper wrap?
I realize this isn't an answer to your proposed question, and might require a bit of extra cash etc., but just a thought.

After reading your post from the Sparklebrite guy, I have to say that I like him a lot. I don't have use for his product (at least not that I am aware of), but he was clear, concise, and upfront about what his product is and is not. He has found a niche and is filling it. You cannot ask more than that of a business man. We all go and purchase cheap stuff at Wal-Mart for exactly the same reason.
This is an interesting thread indeed.

Ditto.......:)

That is pretty much the same scenario with the "holo film" I had pointed out. If you wanted to create a unique and seriously eye-catching drum kit that EVERYONE would notice, that would be a route to consider. Again, I would keep it indoors. I have actually had people ask me how we mounted the "lights" inside a piece of 1/4" plastic with that material affixed. Of course there were no lights involved.
As with all things, time-quality-price, pick two. If you have the time and inclination, the sparkle finish the Jonnistix and RogerSling came up with (I think) looks pretty great and would be a quality finish at a very cheap price. Messy to apply though.

That 16 inch FT was the subject of a thread 'mystery floor tom' or something like that. I learned it was Slinger or indeed Leedy (though the Slinger lugs, not the Leedy lugs). After that, I posted it in the FS section - and no bites. After that, I decided to part it out and made a bundle on it - paid some bills. Now I have this shell.....might as well use it since I sold the 14 in FT that was part of this project kit. With my next kit, I would want a 16 anyway - I have plenty of 14s.
So, I looked at what hardware I have and figured I had all the parts, except a couple hoops that I ordered from a friend as part of another deal. So, I have all I need for it. BTW - the wrap on it....some type of satin (complete with the textured wrap) that had been painted a rather ugly red color.
So, no ambitions for a genuine Slinger kit, and the Slinger FT shell (which also is thinner with re-rings) will fit in well with the MIJ shells (also thinner 3ply with re-rings). It will end up 12,13,16,20BD,14sn - or I may just run it with one tom from time to time.

If you have anything to trade, you might want to get in touch with member jccabinets (Jeff). He does great finish work and can paint a sparkle finish for trade possibly.

Here are some colors I have come up with - of wallpaper (Water Droplets one is contact paper).
BUT - the problem is that some of these appear (I have not finished my research yet) to be sold exclusively out of Germany. When shipping is factored in, it turns out to be like $80 instead of the published purchase price. :(

I've been looking at his wraps today. Yes too bad OVS shipping adds $30 but still not bad for what you get. He also mentions his new thicker wrap as "credit card thick". Average credit card is .028"-.030" thick. The WMP wrap I bought from Drum Foundry is .028" and some old WMP Gretsch I have is .027". So his thicker stuff seems to be in the general thickness range on some wraps as we know it. He includes tape and grommets. The Luddy Accents I have are a thin film (wine color) wrap as original and I'll plan a inexpensive rewrap someday. I'll remove the old film wrap as it looks like it comes right off anyway. It's loose on all the shells. Good chance I'll try his stuff on these. Just not sure what color(s) yet. Anyway please keep us updated on your project. Will be cool to see.
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
