From Mike Curotto

I'd leave the holes and add an L&L tone control, I'm almost positive the holes will line up and even if you have to "massage" the holes a tad at least you'll have an era-correct tone control on the drum....I'd also leave the gold strip as it documents a "custom (albeit after-market) job" from yesteryear...Mike Curotto

I was going to say the same thing about the paint. Nice score for $300!

Thanks guys. I am very pleased with this purchase. My plan is to leave the shell as-is while I gather the necessary parts and clean the plated bits. Maybe the racing stripe will grow on me.

After much thought, I decided that the black paint and racing stripe had to go. It was clearly not original. After removing all of the metal bits, I carefully scraped off the black and gold finish with a single edge razor blade. No chemicals were used. After scraping off the paint, I lightly sanded the wood then rubbed on 3 coats of satin urethane. The badge was not removed. Getting down to bare wood was surprisingly easy, since the previous owner didn't sand the original clearcoat off before his 'custom' paint job. The black and gold were laying on top of the very old clear finish. The nickel plated parts were all hand polished with Simichrome. Thanks to Mike Curotto for the era correct tone control. For the moment, I don't have strainer guards and I'm using puresound vintage wires. I have not tuned it up yet, since I don't know how much tension these old brass claws can handle.
