Got the drum, with a few surprises... The tone control holes are a hack-job and the paint treatment is clearly NOT original. Pictures tell the whole story. The 'speckled' treatment on the black is intentional gold over-spray. It looks like the artist carefully taped over the badge rather than removing it. There is also a bit of black overspray on the interior. Not sure how I will proceed. Would appreciate any additional thoughts. That does not look like overspray to me. The straight line had to be taped off and the "overspray" is right up to it !!

You will always find overspay from the primary color inside, Ludwig didn`t have much quality control with the inside of their drums, hence the glue drips, overspray, and drilling burs !!

Bunch of pics. and maybe Mike will chime in again, Bunch of pics. please !!

The chip in the gold stripe shows the grey primer straight lined with the black !! My guess is the gold was put on first, taped off then the black and spidots !! Nobody tapes off the edges of the badge, the paint will seep under the badge reguardless !!

Looking at the badge again, it has spots, forget that last post but I still think all that was added were the spots and stripe !!

Even though it's an aftermarket finish, I would clean it up the best I could, & leave it as it is. The holes can be filled ,& camouflaged. If you strip & refinish this yourself , it will be a big job, & in the end you will not have much added value because it is still a "refinished " piece. A Professional lacquer job will be expensive. ( a lot depends on your original intention : is this a player or a resale opportunity).

Too weird - I did not notice those spots on the badge until you mentioned it. The close up picture is quite revealing.

Nearly every drum I buy gets the same treatment... bought in need of TLC, fix it up, play it for about a year, then sell it. I really do like this one, so I may keep it a while, depending on the sound.

The gold stripe is slightly raised, so it was added later. I suppose it's possible that the shell was originally black lacquer and the gold stripe was added. The black paint is very thin. The 1928 catalog on vintagedrumguide.com says that the drum was available as "mahogany, maple, white enamel or black ebonized". I'm thinking that the black was added later, since the tone control holes have black paint in them. Not sure how I'll handle the paint. I like the black but not the gold.

Mike - sending you an email about parts. Thanks!

Jim

That seller seems to sell quite a few vintage drums and one would think that he knows his stuff. The descriptions of his items in his listings always seem to be vague enough to get me to shy away from his auctions. I'm always wary when a listing contains more information about the sellers rules than details about whatever it is they are trying to sell.

Regardless, hopefully its a good sounding drum for a decent price.

I'd leave the holes and add an L&L tone control, I'm almost positive the holes will line up and even if you have to "massage" the holes a tad at least you'll have an era-correct tone control on the drum....I'd also leave the gold strip as it documents a "custom (albeit after-market) job" from yesteryear...
