How about some Matador drums

Loading...

Hey guys,

I found these Matador drums earlier this week

they were advertised locally on Craig's list for a hundred bucks

I was lucky enough to catch the posting just minutes after showing up

There are no resonant side heads hoops or hardware on any of the drums

There is also no snare drum that my seller knows of so far

But on the up side there is the floor tom included for a change

The missing lugs are identical to those found on an Olympian kit

somewhat like but bulkier and with a flat much less rounded profile to them than the run of the mill Slingerland copy lugs

I have some like them in mediocre to poor condition in the bass drum size

and maybe a few stragglers in the tom size but I think I will need twenty tom sized to get reso heads back on these drums

From what I can gather, these Matador badged drums

may be a bit less common than many of the other stencil names

First time for me seeing them other than a reference to them on the Japanese drum badge page ....Kenwood

p.s. I have been trying to post some photos but have had no luck

each time I got the error message below I've tried resizing them

by sending them to myself via e-mail same result

if anyone knows how to correct that? please let me know

These sound like a possible Crown/Pearl drum, like Arai.

Hi,

no idea on the Matadors.

But you can send me the pics to my website email and I'll resize them for you.

Cheers, Ralf

Hello Ralf,

Would you have any idea on who to contact to sort out the problem with my uploading the pics ? I appreciate the offer to help

and most likely will take you up on that

I was looking to fix the root of the problem first and foremost

I sort of lost track of this thread until just the other day

As I have spent the other night looking the drums over some Kenwood

I am posting these pics for Kenwood (Kenny).

These are made by Pearl. You got the best MIJs - the 3-ply with re-rings. These will sound GREAT. And that wrap - Tiger Eye Pearl AKA Root Beer Swirl is among the most coveted wraps in Vintage Drums. Nice Slingerland Tempo King pedal.

Adding first pic only at the moment - a bit of a test.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Love that color Kenny, makes me want to go buy some root beer barrels! Those will clean up nice. Did the timbales/bongos come with it? Rich.

Hello guys

I was finally able to upload some new pictures

So here are some pics of the Matador drums

after being re-fitted with fresh heads and resonant side heads, hoops and lugs

(Hoshino from what I have read elsewhere) not the nicest examples one could find but correct at least

Also I hastily put them together just to see how they would look a full disassembly and cleaning will follow

Note the rail assembly and mounts I removed for the time being as some attention is needed with that

The toms were factory drilled to be used by a left handed drummer

One unfortunate factory flub while making this kit a lefty

was on the thirteen inch tom

the sound hole for the badge was drilled adjacent to the seam on the wrap

most likely where the internal muffler knob should normally be located

Over the years they have been altered to accommodate a right handed drummer

as the whole rail assembly was shifted over a few inches on the bass drum

as for the spurs, I am sure they are not the correct type

I think the original spurs had an angled bend in them and where never straight

These straight spurs stuck out way too far to steady the bass drum and they looked ridiculous

the brackets are correct but were ruined by having two big standard thread machine bolts forced into them

They where also repositioned on the drum in order for the non original straight spur rods to work at all

I put the spur brackets back in their original position and for the lack of a correct set of spur rods

my one trusty set of old Ludwig hoop mounted spurs are standing in for now.

Factory flubbed as left handed ..stripped of all reso hardware no telling how many years ago

and then hacked and re-hacked to be played right handed these Matadors have been through the mill

Still they are finished in this beautiful tiger eye/root beer strata

or whatever the heck this wrap is called

and I have not seen any other Matador drums so far

Internet searches, to this point at least,

bring up only a much more modern line of conga drums

Is anyone else sitting on any Matador shells ?

Like a snare drum perhaps ??.......Kenwood
