HOSHINO Red Pearl finish

Loading...

Yep!

an other saved kit .

This Hoshino is now very pretty.

Kit was in not very good condition, but after hours of works the kit is now ready to rock.

I find some beautiful PREMIER Hoops with psychedelic wrap. The (only one) original hoop was so rusty...

Hope 'vry body enjoy it...

Love Peace & Happiness

That kit looks like new! WOW - Great job!

What is the wood, ply, grain, etc.

Did you replace the rail mount holes with eyelets? (pic?)

I think pure black hoops would look better, which you could easily trade (sell/buy) considering the Premier hoops you have to work with there. Just my opinion.

What did you use on the wrap?

What did you use to clean/polish the chrome?

What heads are you running on these?

I know - questions questions! :)

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Q:Did you replace the rail mount holes with eyelets? (pic?)

A: yes i did, cause it was incomplete

Q:What did you use on the wrap?

A: i use the Abelauto P5 polish cream(25 euros) and polish machine i bought for 10 euros

Q:What did you use to clean/polish the chrome?

A: Miror chrome cream and elbow grease

Q:What heads are you running on these?

A:i found some old Remo from the 70 with small crown and tomtom logo

The wood is a classical built from japan, vertical grain, 6 plys

Well, the p5 cream is very good, even for your car. Non agressive for the hands.

And here is an other exemple of polish on my 68' LUDWIG

Wow! That creme did a great job with the buffing machine effort. The oyster blue is really transformed.

Great comeback save on this kit. Love that red finish. Congratulations and thanks for the tip on the P5 cream. Looks like good stuff.

What indication do you have that those are Hoshino, and not Crown drums? All the lugs, spur mounts and T-rods look like Crown parts.I'm asking this because in a previous post I'd mentioned that Crown drums looked unique from Pearl,of which they were supposed to be derived,or a stencil of.Red Pearl is very cool...

They are without doubt "Hoshino Kougyou" - not "Hoshino Gakki", the factory behind Star, later Tama.

Hoshino Kougyou was a factory, and the kits sold under many names - here in Europe "Aria", "Santana" and "Luxor" amongst others. And sometimes just "Hoshino".

T-rods and claws on this kit are not original, maybe that is what greates confusion?

Regrettably, this forum has helped spread more uncertainty about this brand than knowledge, as a couple of the guys that knows a lot about Star and Pearl and their associated stencil brands for a long time seemed to deny the existence of this, the third japanese brand (until Yamaha came along). Thus, if you go a couple of years back, you will find threads with Hoshino kits that was described in a lot of different but faulty ways - "mix-ups of Star and Pearl", "transitionary kits" and so on - while they really just are Hoshino Kougyou.

On the other hand, during the last two years, there has been a constant flow of Hoshino kits popping up, with pictures. You should be able to search and find those threads.

The lugs on your kit are a 100% giveaway - and they are fitted to the vast majority of Hoshino kit. A second, pointy ("Star"-like, if you like) type was fitted to the cheaper kits, and the last (ca. 1978) kits were fitted with a copy of Rogers Beavertail lugs.

Jon

Thanks for the (hopefully)final clarification on this subject.Of course the fact that "Hoshino"is part of both brand names doesn't help any.I cannot see, physically, any relationship between the featured drums and Pearl/Star drums. But there does seem to be a "cousinship"between these and the Sharktooth -lug drums, like certain Blackjack types.I also wonder about the possibility of "Brand 3"being involved with the production of certain later MIT's,like Gretsch Blackhawk from the early 80's.Similarities not so much in actual hardware shape, but metal casting type.High failure rate porous castings, tom mounts, leg mounts etc. Also no similatities to Pearl stencils of this period.

Actually Hoshino Kougyou lugs - especially those on this kit - are high quality, non porous, very solid.

In total opposition to the (few) Star lugs I have had to work with - and, I must sadly say, also in opposition to the lugs on my beloved Tama Superstars.

The shells on these Hoshinos, on the other hand, are nothing special. Quite round, but often with very badly made bearing edges.

Tha last project Hoshino was involved in was the "TRAK" system from around 1984 - then they folded, at least as a drum making company.

Regards

Jon.

PS. I know this, because my first kit was just such one. I have therefore had an leaning towards them since, for sentimental reasons, and have owned 5-6 kits for shorter or longer time. They are a quite lot more common here in Denmark than Pearls from the sixties/seventies - and we have almost no Star-kits at all.
