Hi all

I'm, a 30 yr drummer who is restoring my 9 year old's first kit.

My question is....

What MIJ stencil drums came with 2 bass spurs per side?

I'm, pretty sure these are Pearl clone because of the lugs and tom arms(hex ball rods) a la Pearl Presidents.

I was sure they were Maxwins or Tempests but the bass spurs have me stumped.

NICEST 9 ply luan shells I've ever seen. Really tight grain on outer/inner plies. Not stringy grain at all.

knife sharp 45 deg edges.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

will do when I'm finished stripping them.

some genius treated them to the black Tremclad, inside and out. "sigh"

and they filled some holes with...."gasp"...wood filler or poly filla or the like.

deep breath...."blink, blink"

Anyway.

They look identical to the maxwin 505's except for the xtra bass spur per side.

Perhaps the xtras were a mod. Holes look really clean though and are perfectly lined up.

Just finished stripping shells.

The pearl style lugs are not original.

Shell was re drilled for em.

Original lugs were rounder Pearl type. Maybe even "battleship" lugs.

There are 2 small holes on either side of the grommet hole on each drum.

Only badges I've seen like that are Stewart.

Did Stewart ever put out a kit with bass drums with 2 pairs of spurs?

edit: xtra spur holes were NOT original.

Here are the shells after the refinish.

Finished the burst 2 days ago. 1 coat of 2lb cut shellac last nite to lock it all in.

couldn't spray today (humidity)

I'm pretty sure these are Stewarts or Tempest Deluxe.

Here's some pix of the hardware.

This kit was kind of a mixed bag.

Tom mounting system seems to be original.

Kick drum came with 2 different kinds of claws and 3 different kinds of T rods.

The 14" floor tom came with the hardware on the left. "Japan" stamped inside these parts. These appear to be original to the drum. Obviously wasn't part of this kit originally.

All the rest of the drums came with the lugs on the right, but the shells showed marks of originally having lugs like the middle one(there was also a box of assorted hardware that included a number if these lugs)

Kit had NO original finish and no snare was included.

edit:

One of the bass drum hoops has this black faux leather-like wrap on it.

Welcome, New Guy!

I wonder if those shells were CB- 700? The tom mount, arms, shell brackets and the rectangular lug are all identical to the CB-700 that I have, from the early to mid 70's. Those are nicer luan shells...well made and not stringy.

Possibly a CB-700 that was "frankensteined" with various other parts?

CB maybe.

I originally thought Maxwin but the impression from the badges and the fact that the badges were held on with 2 screws or tacks suggest an oval badge.

That's what got me thinkin Stewart or Tempest Deluxe.

I'm pretty sure the square lugs are not the originals.
