Has anyone used wraps from Bum Wraps?

Loading...

I've used wraps from both Precision and JamminSams, but I just browsed the Bum Wrap Drum Co. site for the first time. Prices are great, but I get the feeling that their vintage pearl wraps aren't really pearls, but rather photo prints of real pearls. I'm guessing that these wraps have no real depth or luminescence. I'm looking at their various black oyster pearls to wrap a friend's orphan kit, but I'd hate to spend the money on a wrap that doesn't look anything like the original Ludwig OBP.

Anyone have any experience with Bum Wrap?

Mike was hoping you'd get some feedback. I know a few people here have used them. 1 for the Mod wrap. Maybe they'll chime in for you. Your correct these are high quality digital scans that are printed. Pearls and oysters might not show the depth you'd want to see. They do offer samples at .80 ea. That might be the way to go just to see in person. Looks like a pretty cool option for those impossible to find Mod color wraps. I just wish someone would make a good old fashion WMP big chip pattern wrap someday. In brighty white!! Hello....Danmar??? LOL

Mike, I think member " drumfactory" ( Gary) has used this product and really liked it.

Thank you!

Thanks guys. With three different Oyster Blacks available, I guess spending a couple bucks on the samples would be the way to go. Better safe than sorry. I'd still like to hear from anyone who's actually used their wraps. They seem like a good company producing unique products. I really like the idea of creating a one-of-a-kind wrap from a photo. The possibilities are endless.

I had a kit wrapped in oyster black and was disappointed with the result. There were a lot of very white areas that in the past had been more like pearl - the idea of an oyster shell!

I don't know exactly where the guy got it, but he is one of the most renowned restorers out there. Here's a picture of a snare drum with essentially the same wrap on it.

Sorry not to be able to help on Bum wrap. I've only ever used wrap from Precision on my own work.

My first post! I have wrapped several sets using Bum:

1. Thinner than Jammin Sam means you don't have to remove the existing wrap.. it goes right over it. It's thin enough so there's no problem getting heads to fit.

2. You can remove it easily if you need to change it. The adhesive is only on one end of the covering so it's not fused to the shell.

3. Installation is easy... no drilling for lug screws. You can use an Exacto knife.

4. They sent me the wrong design and were anxious to send me the correct one. Very easy to do business with.

5. All drums are one piece of wrap, even the bass drum.

I like them, very easy to use and impressive looking.

I've used their wraps extensively. They are simply color printed and laminated graphics that you can do at any print shop. Same process print shops use for printing restaurant menus, but with a much bigger printout. Their price isn't even all that great. I do the same thing locally with a print shop and save a few dollars.

They are not good for printing pearls or sparkles, those kinds of wraps use a multi-layered approach with semi-transparent layers to give the pearlescent or sparkling effects. Bum wrap is simply photocopying a graphic image done in photoshop. So it's not really suitable if you want that 3d or pearly or sparkly effect. But it's great if you want to apply a graphic texture like a woodgrain or photographic image.

I will say this for them, they do a better job than my local print shop in terms of lamination. The ones I've done locally tend to buckle or bubble up around the lugs sometimes. I never had that problem with Bumwrap. Still I think they need to revisit their pricing. I know what their process is, it's just not that expensive or complex. Try to negotiate a better deal with them if you can. If enough people do, maybe they will take the hint.

Thanks guys for your first-hand input. I think I'm convinced Bum Wraps is not the source for the OBP I'm looking for, but their wood grains certainly look great. They make even an inexpensive MIC set look like custom made drums.

And welcome Drummerchip! This is the site for vintage drum talk.

They do 4 versions of black oyster pearl, one is more grey than black.

I have used them and I can say they are very helpful and will replace any faulty coverings very quickly. I highly recommend them and the price is good

here is a pic of my kit using the Bum Wrap covering

One thing I found when researching them is that they use the same photo on every size of drum, they just stretch it out.

So that means the ripples or chips on a 14x22 bass drum would be bigger than on say an 8x12 tom.

I think the idea is a quick way to rewrap you new pdp, or DW set.

Not a way to finish a restoration.

We are not their target market.
