French GARY PARIS in progress
Thanks you all for thoses good words.
To remove the black color, i first stand in front of the shells and try to find how it was paint.
Aerosol black glossy, or prehaps big car airbrush. The fact is that there was no protection of the inside shell, so there is drop of paint in the natural wood.
And worth.
The 13' shell was the hardest work, because it's smaller and the painter put more black paint on it (it's perhaps the first he do). It was well paint, with no drop or paint-run, perhaps a car painter's works.
So, a good way to live is to be positive!
The black glossy protect the rhodoïd from UV for 3 or 4 decades.
First i try some DECAPEX (chemical) on the paint.
NEVER DO THAT, MY FRIEND!
It works perhaps on other kind of rhodoïd, but not on this delicate french skin...
So i come back to the old method, ELBOW GREASE and Emery.
Different kind of emery the last one was 600.
Long and delecate ZEN work.
After that i use PIERRE DE NETTOYAGE, witch is a fine powder with sponge, using it dry to clean and polish. Long work.
I'm still looking for a good POLISH CREME for plastic, i only find "inside car plastic renovator" that not satisfy me.
Voila, i hope that i give you answer you need.
Here is the Site of an other beautiful GARY. The owner, BALDO (gary-baldo)a multimedia alternative artist agree to be here. Visit his site too, it's funny and it's a very good taste of France. On the gig pictures section, there is drummers with old material.

Great job.
I once had a STAR bass drum covered with red spray colour all over. I've got best results with an electric angle grinder plus a paste. You only have to watch carefully the process and stop at a point, when the red colour is off there.
It worked out very well. Before I polished the wrap, I used acetone on my fingers by wiping once and fast with the fingers over the surface. This caused a bright shining, but still with some stripes in it. The final polishing with a top part on a drilling machine improved the result.
OH, and those badges are simply beautiful, especially the 'Gary' one,
Ralf
Sorry, but I discover this thread ...
great job Walstib ! Have you finished the restoration ? Other pictures of the kit restored ?
Encore bravo !!
Thank you all!
the"belle bleu" is almost finish, some details and the logo on the bass drum and it's...gone.
T'was a good job, and once again i learn a lot of things.
And the old lady is ready to dance all nite long.
The final work will be post in few days.

Gorgeous drums. Nice work.
I restored a Gary wrap some years ago using different grades of "wet" sand paper (from 400 to 1200). The final touch was given using a Teflon based wax I bought at a ship hardware store.
More recently I did some restoration work with 3M polishing paper (grades go up to 8000), micro gloss fluid, and final buffing with this Teflon boat wax.
Friends have used Carnauba wax with great results too.
Cool drums - I like the name.
I bought an ASBA Caroline bd pedal in the early 70's and from what I remember it was the best for me at that time.
Congratulations on theseClapping Happy2
The reborn of "La Belle Bleue" is over now.
I create the bass drum logo from a logo pedal, infos from Gary drums are so rare, even in France.
So, i'm happy with this beautiful kit, that was destinate to trash, or so...
The last surprise was the hoops, once again paint in black with white tape (why?). I discovered the original wrap under all that. More work but nice classy look!
