for you Ludwig 3ply owners- heads and tuning

Loading...

Just recently bought my first vintage kit...a restored 1960's 4 pc Ludwig with 3 ply shells ( the white interior painted ones). I'm just wondering for all you other 3 ply Ludwig players, what type of heads you prefer for your batter and resonator that you find works the best with 3 ply shells to get that classic " Ludwig" sound......And how do you tune your heads?....Do you tune the batter and resonator even, or is one higher or lower than the other? Like to hear some feedback from you more advanced players and any cool tuning tricks you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Well, the individual drum usually dictates the head choice and tensioning. I've had 3ply shells that sounded great with G2s and some that needed Amb and some that needed G1s and some that needed Emp and some that needed coated and some that needed clear and some that needed thin top and bottom and some that needed med top and thin bottom and some that needed thick top and med bottom and some that needed Ludwig med top and bottom and some that needed Ludwig med only on the bottom with a different batter and some that needed calf on top and bottom and some that needed calf only on top with clear thin bottom and ... well, you get the point.

Please, try different combos on the wing tom only. That will help you narrow the choice and not cost you so much. Use your ears and take what others tell you with a grain of salt.

I recently acquired my first vintage Ludwig kit and it came with coated Ambassador batters and clear Ambassador on the resonant side. I have been an Evans guy but I have to admit that they sound really good. I put a new stock Ludwig logo on the kick and I am using the Powerstroke that it came with, sounds very low and booming. I like my toms tuned low.

I have tensioned the bottom head a little tighter then the top for years.

Re heads........I might try Ludwig coated, that have the 60's logo's on them. They offer them stock now!

I bought classic coated emperors for the tops and coated ambassadors for my bottoms and smooth white ambassador front side reso head with ps3 on the batter. The kick is most impressive. The toms sound huge and phat. My drums are a 1966 classics kit I guess. To me, when I tuned them just a bit past medium they sounded like Ginger Baker's Cream kit. I just wanted to play Sunshine and do Buddy Rich triplets around the kit. It is a blast to play. I am interested in trying all coated ambassadors on it too.

Thanks for all the feedback folks! All of the responses were very helpful....I'll do some experimenting and post the results back here sometime soon!

I never knew Ludwig made drumheads! Are they made as well as Remo, Evans, etc?

I use Remo coated Ambassadors top and bottom, evenly tuned. I do like the Pinstripe and a muffl' on the bass batter and the black logo head on the front. The classic white logo heads have a different Mylar and to me they sound a bit flabby. Enjoy the new kit.
