floortom damaged on delivery

Loading...

thank you thin shell. very interesting.

I see my case will need reinforcement patch of 1-2 beech veneer from the inside, sonor did it anyway by its own. Now I have 2 brave ideas:

1. Use something inflatable, like a gym ball, to slightly loose the crack area and place the walls exactly one against another. They are like saw there. And also precisely position the separated peace of wood. Looks very risky.

2. Make a reinforcement ring from 2 ply of beech and come 2" wide to reinforce entire perimeter of the shell. This will change its sound, but wil make it symmetricaly and better spread the load on the damaged area. Also risky.

As an alternative, to 1. is plase everything with razor, and to 2. use small ractangular 3ply patch to cover the place. What do you thank?

Btw, is it possible to rename this topic to "teardrop floortom repair", or smthg, as I am not blaming delivery, nor advocate local pickaup selling. I would never found anything valuable in my local area, so ebay and postal delivery is blessing, even if smthing like that happening.

Have you considered fabricating a steel plate for the inside that would span over the newly patched wood? You know like the plates that go on for tom mounts. You could have three plates made up, one for each mount, that way from the inside it would look balanced.

Thank you!

What I would do if I was repairing that shell would be to remove part of the inner ply about an inch all the way around the hole and from the back of the plug. I would then glue in the plug with outer ply with the wrap and the middle ply.

Once that was dry I would then replace the inner ply with a new piece of veneer. This would make the repair much stronger.
