floortom damaged on delivery

Loading...

Hello, not exactly the restoration, but repair. I've just recieved my sonor teardrop kit, and the travel left the floor tom without one leg and a hole in the respective place.

Well I'am not that big drummaker, and never thought to be. May I ask your opinion on wheather it is repareble (to some extent) and what it best way to do that

Best regards.

OUCH!! I would ask for a partial refund if shipped in transit. Poor packaging and a long trip can make for some bad issues....repair is possible with some good wood glue and patience, but she won't look or possibly sound the same.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

That drum is screwed, stewed, and barbequeued!!!!! It is toast, and possibly only good for firewood.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

I hate to say it, but it does look like a train-wreck of a break. Looks like there was a metal back-plate to the leg mount that pulled clean away taking shell, wrap and all in one chunk. Even repaired, it'll never be the same. Go for the partial refund and buy a replacement floor tom if you can.

Just some bad luck, man.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Thank you, that's basically how I plan to act - ask for refund and wait for replacement. But strangely, the damaged floortom still holds heads under tension and even has some tone. Probably strong reinforcment rings limited the crack effect. I will try to repair it, for sure.

This is what shipping insurance is for.

Did the shipper insure it?

Was it a PayPal transaction?

Did you photograph the packing job the sender did when you discovered the damage?

Lots of stuff to consider here....

Hope it works out for you man, she is severely damaged, bummer.......

that is repairable but it will not be an invisible repair but as long as the all of the wrap is still there, it should be pretty hard to see.

I repaired a WMP ludwig bass drum that the person shipped to me upside down with the rail loose and at that bottom of the box. The large nut punched a hole all the way through and buckled the inner ply. It was pretty involved but the repair came out really well.

I will post pictures later today.

Regardless, if you keep it and get it repaired there should be a partial refund to cover the cost of the repairs.

here are the pictures of the damage and the repair.

The only way to repair it was to cut out the loose section of inner ply. I cut it back far enough so I could access the inner damage and to be able to get glue up under the remaining parts of the loose inner ply.

This shows the hole with the outer ply section taped back into position from the outside.

Here are all of the little pieces put back into place. There were about 10 little pieces that had to go back together like a jigsaw puzzle. These pictures were all taken with no glue. I didn't have time to take pictures during the actual repair.

The inner ply put back into position before clamping.

Here is the repair.

I didn't do any sanding on the inside. Eventually I will sand it and refinish the area of the repair.

Most of the wrap was still attached to the outer ply but a few small parts were MIA. The drum has finish issues and the plan is to re-wrap it anyway so I didn't put any more effort into filling the little gaps.
