eBay listing that infuriates me!

Loading...

Hello VDF members!

From time to time, all of us see listings of drums on eBay, CL, Reverb, etc, with unrealistic asking prices that we all just shake our heads and laugh. I found this recent posting on eBay and wanted to share it with everyone.

Here's the link... https://www.ebay.com/itm/333329799828

After reading the description, I had decided to just say nothing, knowing that the vast majority of interested drummers would feel the same as I do. However, my irritation finally got the best of me and I decided to message the seller, trying to be as politically correct as I could be and at the same time letting them know they're not sitting on a gold mine.

I expect the reply to say that I don't know what I'm talking about and that this is a rare kit worthy of the asking price.

Your thoughts?

Playing on perennial Bonham worship.

Didn't someone just post the day he passed

(yeah. 3 pages worth of worship)

As long as that continues

https://www.drumforum.org/threads/john-henry-bonham-died-on-this-day.165945/page-2#post-1837505

Then prices like this will be asked

it's the constant chatter that creates the asking prices

doesn't mean he'll get it

Well, I'm a newbie, but here's my take -

Rewrap? Even a relative newbie like me knows that drags the price down pretty dramatically.

Non-matching? Again drags the price down. These are random drums just put together to make it look like a Bonham kit.

Modern cymbals? Nice, but they should be vintage.

At this price, I would think this should be a matching, non-rewrap kit with vintage cymbals - that Bonham himself should have played on stage!

The person selling them has been smoking something or he is just a clever marketer. By suggesting that he does not want to sell them, and that some people might think they are overpriced, and he hopes nobody buys them, he's really attempting to fuel a frenzy for those few fanatical buyers that can afford this put together Frankenkit at this price.

Obviously, based on the very detailed description, this person and his son spend a lot of time and energy putting this Bonham tribute kit together. So even with the rewrapped shells and modern cymbals it will have a significant value to Bonham fans who want an accurate looking kit, even one that is not legitimately vintage due to the wraps. I'm sure there is a buyer out there with cash who would be willing to spend several thousand dollars to acquire this compromised "complete" kit, even though based on the value of the individual components it is very over priced. However, whether there is someone fanatical or desperate enough to spend $15,000 remains to be seen.

In the end I ignore such silliness. The only eBay transactions I worry about are those where an item is actually misrepresented. That does not appear to be the case here since the issue appears to just be the ridiculously high asking price. A seller can ask whatever he wants, no matter how outrageous. Its really up to the potential buyers to educate themselves and perform due diligence before buying. We can't protect buyers from poor purchase decisions.

I watched an interview on television yesterday on AXS TV. The interview was of Roger Daltry that was conducted by Brian Johnson of AC-DC. Daltry seemed to be very open and honest in his responses to the questions. He recounted many instances of the excesses of members of The Who. When it came to the deaths of Moon and Entwistle, Roger stated that he was part of a band in which the other three members were drug and alcohol addicts. He lamented Keith Moon's death at a young age as an inevitable result of Moon's addictions. He found some humor in the unfortunate "rock star" style of death of Entwistle while receiving the services of a prostitute in a Las Vegas hotel room. Some people have said that I'm too harsh in disapproving of the substance abuse related deaths of celebrities. Bonham was an abuser who probably inadvertently committed suicide from over indulgence. I don't think that I'm harsh at all about that type of death for anybody irrespective of fame of the abuser. The term "accidental overdose" is usually a sugar-coating of the real issue--substance abuse and seeing how close to death they can come without really dying.. I'll climb down from my soap box now.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I collect but I collect snare drums from the 1900s-1940s +/- so my question is what what would the correct price be if that Green Sparkle set was all correct, all original and of-the-era?

Here's what I wrote to the crackhead seller:

Sir, I have been buying, selling and playing vintage drums for decades. This green sparkle, refurbished, recovered drumset is priced at about $12,000-$12,500 more than it is worth. Just because it has the cache of being a duplicate of Bonham's set, doesn't change the fact that it is not original. I have no selfish interest in buying it myself, but I can tell you that the vintage drum community-which is actually quite small-is already hip to this drumset and the price you are asking. If you hook a sucker, more power to you, but I'm afraid you have priced yourself out of the realm of reality. Good luck though.

You'd have to see first- how close you can get- down to the smallest detail- a New set. Then- what ever detail can't be duplicated New--- start adding towards the like new old set

I'll guess a New Set as close as you can get would run? 3600-maybe 3400-3800?

Seller makes a big deal about those stands; everyone I know (including me) has two or three of them at home. But they would be something "they"don't" make anymore..
