Drumming injuries

Oh boy...I once sprained my right ankle at 3:00 on a Saturday afternoon and had a gig that night. One of the guys in the band was staying at my house that weekend, and after lying down for a couple of hours with ice on my elevated ankle, he helped me load the drums in the car. The rest of the guys unloaded and carried the drums, I set them up and played the gig with the ankle wrapped in an Ace bandage. I was loaded full of Ibuprofen and in pain, but I made it somehow. When were done, everybody carried the drums out to the car. The playing wasn't too bad, but carrying was impossible.

I once played a gig pretty much one-handed when I had tendonitis in my left arm another time.

I don't know where it came from but I have a numbness from my left elbow to my left pinky and ring finger. Very much like if you hit your funny bone but milder. It's been like this a few months now. I've been to a neurologist and was perscribed some steroids plus a $270 doctors bill which never helped.

I started playing again after 35 years and for the first month I felt great - the drumming sure wasn't though. Since then I have developed, what I think, is trigger finger in my right middle finger and general stiffness in all fingers. I've been playing matched grip cuz traditional was just too tough to relearn for my left (weak) hand. Gee, It's great getting old..............

i think my worst had to be a gig back in about 1993-94, i had the full on cage system at the time( well i had to - i was in a 90's rock band! hee hee), and as the intro tape rolled, we strode through the crowd to the stage, (nothing cheesy-ego, we just had to) and i thought it would be a good idea to enter my drum kit a la chris eubank, and flip myself over the top bar.

my lace got caught on a cymbal stand, i ended up falling ever so ungracefully toward the ground, where i face planted the bass pedal, scraped my rib cage down the snare rim, cracked my back on the stool, and my shins scraped down my hi-hats!!

but the lads didn't notice!! and started the gig,as they should have, when the intro stopped!!

bring on much laughter from the crowd, AND my band mates!! it was funny though!!

full respect to the cage system too, coz nothing moved!! i just got up and we carried on!! great days!!

Drums are loud....So play them LOUD!!!
