Drum Mate kit, 20/14/12.

Loading...

Hi all,

This is my Drum Mate kit, MIJ around 1968 - 1970 or so.

I filled in the edges, cleaned the shells, oiled the insides with teak and scrubbed all the hardware with aluminium/coke. Then WD-40'd it all.

A few (non permenant) changes, I added curved bass drum spurs instead of the straight ones; I just think they look a lot nicer. I also had to remake a bass mounted cymbal stand as it didn't come with the kit. The mount is actually very far back on these kits, so the small boom makes it far more playable.

I'm still waiting on trip flanged hoops, so right now these have thick single flanged hoops.

Got the kit fo £50, so not too bad. Still got the snare to do.

Still looking for some lugs if any about. Cheers..

sweet little kit. Nice score / nice job. You add the wood hoops yourself? How do they sound?

THAT,my friend is ALL IT!The straight hoops make it.And the cymbal arm is a great idea.Like a retro-mod.

Love it when someone saves/preserves an MIJ, especially in those sizes.

thanks for all the nice comments,

It came with wood hoops when sold new but the one wood hoop that was supplied with the kit was cracked, so these are on loan from another kit.

I had to change the inserts to 7/32, so have some spare MIJ tension rods, if anyone needs any? Free if you pay postage!

Great DrumMate, mate! :)

The wooden hoops are a nice contrast to the Grey Diamond Pearl finish.

I, too, don't understand, why STAR mounted the cymbal arm so far away (perhaps for a 24" Ride or so, huh?).

I'll shoot you an email, too, conc. a pic for my website, Sir, once you've finished the snare drum as well.

I've got a rather nice 24, not sure I'd trust it on this!

... good point ...

But a 10" Splash would definitely be out of reach (... unless you use anyhow extended sticks ...).

I've seen that wrap before! I don't know if it was on a 'Drum Mate', but it sure was so very cool!

Now then, that is one fine job on the restoration! Also, a very innovative idea for the cymbal mount. Please post more pix when you get the snare finished.
