Nice work everyone! Someday I want to build a stave drum, but for now this is the only custom snare I have done. Keller, 8 ply maple shell, Rogers lugs, strainer and butt. THe hoops are mit. Wrap is KOA veneer with clear lacquer. I did double 45 edges and 5.5x 1/8 bed. Actually sounds good,LOL!

I had lots of parts laying around not being used for anything. My wife bought me a 6.5x14 steambent walnut shell from Vaughncraft for our anniversary this year. This is what I came up with. It's mostly Ludwig and not sure if it falls in the mod category. . .James

That is a pretty shell.
Jeff, as always, kudos.

Wow. What beautiful work all around.
VistaBob I want to see the one with the large vent-holes! Ha! It's like having a hole in the floorboard...

Macr0w, what is that throw on your last stave? . . .James
Ego strainer on last snare. I just scavenged one of my custom snares to rat-rod a newer custom, and I have a leftover throw and its butt just like that, only in gunmetal black with a black painted "barrel". If you want it, I'll get it to you at a decent price.
its current state is not assemebled but when its torqued down this baby has POP!!!!
very loud Cool Dude

Now that's a RAT ROD! :)
Purists, divert your eyes...And excuse me if this thread exists elsewhere, but I couldn't find it...After seeing some of the really cool customs members like ElMoonlightDrummer and GG Vintage (among many others) have put together I've been inspired. Backstory: I've got a ratty Ludwig Standard I found literally in the garbage about 5 years ago. It was covered in stickers, rust and other gunk and missing half the strainer. I cleaned it up and put a later P-83 on it. The original(?) hoops didn't clean up well and there's the usual chrome flaking. A couple months back I got an MIJ kit and on the snare, by some miracle, was a chrome block letter P-83. So that went on it. At the end of the day though its still a ratty, flaking Standard, so I thought a cool candidate for some customization. Just for kicks. Like what a car builder might call a "rat-rod". So last night I added some spare nickel Slingerland hoops and clips, and MIT 42-strand wires. Sounds like beast. Now we're getting somewhere! I think it's begging for some tube lugs (chrome...or brass?) And maybe to be liberated of the flaking chrome? So I know there's gotta be more of these mix and match monsters out there. If you have one, post it up! I, for one, would love to see more.
I don't remember where I saw it.nut a guy took a a acro shell,and polished it up so nice,it looked like chrome.
Some guys have done that with supras also.
Anyway,he also put chrome tube lugs on it an single flange rims with clips.
He then installed a Ludwig 60's keystone reproduction badge on it.
The drum looked killer.
