Custom Snares Thread Last viewed: 1 day ago

Purists, divert your eyes...

And excuse me if this thread exists elsewhere, but I couldn't find it...

After seeing some of the really cool customs members like ElMoonlightDrummer and GG Vintage (among many others) have put together I've been inspired.

Backstory:

I've got a ratty Ludwig Standard I found literally in the garbage about 5 years ago. It was covered in stickers, rust and other gunk and missing half the strainer. I cleaned it up and put a later P-83 on it. The original(?) hoops didn't clean up well and there's the usual chrome flaking. A couple months back I got an MIJ kit and on the snare, by some miracle, was a chrome block letter P-83. So that went on it.

At the end of the day though its still a ratty, flaking Standard, so I thought a cool candidate for some customization. Just for kicks. Like what a car builder might call a "rat-rod".

So last night I added some spare nickel Slingerland hoops and clips, and MIT 42-strand wires. Sounds like beast. Now we're getting somewhere!

I think it's begging for some tube lugs (chrome...or brass?) And maybe to be liberated of the flaking chrome?

So I know there's gotta be more of these mix and match monsters out there.

If you have one, post it up!

I, for one, would love to see more.

wow, the word "Rat Rod" crossing over into the Drum world

Falling Do

sounds like a great new thread to me!!

i have a plain jane snare (not sure of the manufacturer)

that has been "rat rodded".

features ludwig strainer and Large Vent Holes cut into the side. might cut your finger if not careful with it as the shell is steel. its rough but its just how i wanted it. i think it sounds great too. i will post a picture this evening to add fuel to this fire!

When I try to explain to people what I have done with my Ludwig Standards I have said that it's like building a "hot rod". Take an old plain shell (body) clean it up, add compatible parts from different years and perhaps some after market parts to make a really cool snare (car). (I own a 1931 Ford Hot Rod. The similarity in the process is obvious.)

Cool thread, Carter. Glad to have been an inspiration. Here is my latest piece of custom work. It started off as a mid-50's 7x14 student Radio King shell, retrofitted the Leedy strainer (only 1 extra hole was needed), Leedy butt plate fit in existing holes, cob stick saver hoops and SlingerLeedy lugs finished it off. Also had it wrapped to match my '58 Ludwig kit. It's kind of like the Leedy snare that never was.

Hey Aaron,

Awesome snare! Really dig those Leedy lugs. I really think Allen Blaemire was inspired by the Leedy lug when he designed his own lugs.

Built this from a Kent 60s ? 13x9 tom shell from Backbeatkeeper a few years ago.

Wrapped with a 70s Blamiere custom black with silver and gold flecks wrap that DrumJinks had sold to Jazzdrummer and passed on to me.......

The rest of the parts are new....

In typical "Rat" fashion, I've got way more tied up in the drum than it will ever be worth :)

Here's one of my rat-rods: a 50's WFL parade drum shell cut down to 6.5"x14" (by our own billnvick) that I covered in wood veneer and converted into a wood super sensitive.

Three stave shells that I made.

The first one I made was a 7x14 in black walnut.

Then I made a 7x14 in waterfall bubinga.

I had enough material left over and made a 5x13 with the scrap.
