Crazy Smashed Fibes Bass Drum Project

Technically Im looking for a shell to replace this one (let me know if you have one), but in the mean time, I thought I would do my best to attempt what looks like a hopeless project. When I got this kit, the bass drum was held together with this bracing and about 30 screws...which worked, but was ugly as all get out. Even when its fixed, there will still be a ton of extra holes in the shell...but I still think it is cool to try to give the kit a second chance, and holes are a lot less horrible looking than "custom venting"....LoLoLoLo

Here is my progress on the bass. The 12/13/16 and matching snare are all in great shape. One minor spider coming off of a leg mount on the floor tom. I think Im gonna play this sucker...because it deserves to be played after all it has been through!

I left one big crack through the middle to do a final "seam" repair before reinforcing all the cracks from the interior and then seeing how much wet sanding is worth attempting to make the outside look as nice as it can. Any suggestions on how to proceed with that (or anything else) is much appreciated.

I don't think that there would be too many guys (even on here), that would have given it a shot... Great job so far..

Adam you get 1000 atta boys for this one~~!!!! Yes serious dedication and the fix looks great. Like a big puzzle. Totally cool save there!! Great idea using the metal straps as a form using the lug holes!! Just brilliant.

I wish it was just the lug holes.

I saved the bracing for future projects, because it would totally be doable using existing lug holes. Unfortunately in this case, the hole are all over the place from the previous owner who used NO glue, but just drilled about 30 holes in the drum and placed this bracing all over the place to hold it together (in conjunction with the heads). I left 3 strips to work as a support and removed the rest. The bracing is now completely off, and the main seam is welding as I type. Before removing the straps, I am going to reinforce the cracks from the interior so the thing doesnt just pop apart once the tension is taken off.

At that point, it will be all about how crazy I wanna get trying to make the outside look nice. I think it is pretty good as is....but I could see filling in some cracks and doing some wet sanding if I can figure out how to do it correctly.

At the same time, no matter how ugly, it will be usable until I find a nice shell to replace this one with.

Still a great save even with the extra holes!! Have a look at this thread. Andrew used Novus to polish them out and maybe try that first before the wetsand?? Worth a shot?

Ill definitely NOVUS them. I already finished the 12 and it looks great. We'll see what it does for the bass in the cracked sections though.
