Copper sparkle experiment

Loading...

I bought a really messed up mij kit last summer along with a Acrolite (1968) and spurlock hihat. The drums were red sparkle. The bass drum was good but the 12" tom had the wrap removed and painted red. The 13 tom had serious cracked wrap. The floor tom had one leg mount that had broken thru the shell. I just recently bought a bunch of parts from a kid that answered my CL add "we buy old drums". So I was able to replace most of the missing parts with that purcahse. One day I was chatting with "Bunnyman" about sparkle finishes. He directen me to www.paintwithpearl.com. I bought some orange copper sparkle and tried it out. The results were good. Nothing at all like a vintage sparkle wrap, you cant re-do that.

Below is a picture of the drums the day I brought them home, along with the other things that came with it.

Now, after removing the wrap I took the luan shells and coated them with a wood filler. Sanded them down and stained them with a custom color stain that has been sitting around. This stain was choosen after several samples and test with other stains and paints. After the stain, I sprayed a heavily toned lacquer to cover the wood filler that was peaking thru the stain. I also cut some edge banding that we use to face the raw plywood edges on shelves. I taped it to a board and sprayed it along with the shells. I will use it for the base drum inlays.

Below are pictures of the shells going thru the process.

Now the drums were ready for the sparkle. This stuff is really neat and easy to use. Just mix int clear coat and go. I have a turn table that I use for spraying doors. I made up an x shaped drum holder, put the drum on it and sprayed the sparkly clear finish while spinning it with the other hand. I ended up spraying three coats of the sparkle mix and then three coats of clear gloss for the last coats. All in all, they look good but I wish I had choosen a red or blue sparkle instead of the oarang copper. I was trying to do do something different. Oh well it was a fun Sunday filled with stain, lacquer, sparkles and a ref full of beer. Yes, I sprayed everything, all coats in one day. That is the beauty of laquer!

Below is the best pictures I could get of the drums but you know how pictures never capture the true colors.

Thank you,

Jeff C

Jeff - If you ask me, the 'experiment' was a banging success! It ended up looking like an age-mellowed Tangerine sparkle finish! It's darker than Tangerine wrap, but for my money, the color you got is an improvement on the eye-shocking real wrap.

You did great, bud! I'm impressed with the results. Do they make a Burgundy sparkle paint? If so, I'm buying some and using it on the next basket-case set of drums I come across.

Well done! Good results.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I think those look great and quite classy. Your color choice was spot on in my opinion. While great, blue and red sparkle kits are everywhere. Yours is now indeed custom. Great job!

Thank you everyone! John, check out the site www.paintwithpearl.com they do have a few red colors, I think. You could probably paint the drum a burgendy color for a base coat then do on of the reds. I will definatly be doing one again. I just need to make me a Purdie Shuffle turntable to make it even easier yet. The base coat yeally plays a big part and thats where you need to " experiment"

Thank you
