Check out these Slingerlands!! Last viewed: 7 seconds ago

Quite a week for Slingys over here.

This latest set caught my eye, but upon looking closely, it looks like the bass drum's been fitted with a Premier tom arm/mount and both the toms with corresponding mounts! Seller says it's 63, which would make it a good buy if price doesn't shoot, but that modding is a worry.

Also, he mentions a 13" tom and a 14" added later. The 14" has no re-rings, so is from a different era. (Perhaps he means 12 and 13, as this seems a little odd, but Slingy experts will be able to advise I'm sure.

Any thoughts?

Forgot to mention - check out the bass drum logo - doesn't look like it would be from 63?

Something not quite right here maybe?

It looks like a Slingy kit that has been wrapped. I don't honestly know if it originally had a wrap, but it has been wrapped. Those bass hoops are obviously wrong for this kit. My guess is they removed the original silver or whatever from the groove, worked the wood, and put in a strip of white. I can't see the spurs, but they sure don't look like early 60's spurs. They appear a bit thick. The early 60's toms would not have had vent holes. These do. That tom mount and such is obviously not Slingy hardware. Its not even from the import era. All of these mods could have been done by the owner in order to bring it up to speed with current looks and road needs. I don't know if it's original, but it is pretty nice.

Cheers for the info!

Funnily enough, seller added this after I posted on here:

"I have been told that the tom holder is a seventies premier lokfast and the tom has been added. This kit would have originally been marine pearl and is a Gene Krupa kit, the type played by Buddy Rich!"

So, seems we're looking at a classic Slingy that's been seriously bastardised:confused:

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Pearl wraps became so not desireable in the 70's.

You know...honestly, that kit's not all messed up. I mean, OK , it's a rewrap...but Slingy did do a white gloss wrap.

If you painted the hoops black, got a new res head and a 'classic" Slingy transfer logo.....you'd have a nice lookin' kit there. They are the 3-ply shells, the good, classic Slingy stuff. Good shells, hardware is there...lugs, hoops, legs, FT brackets, etc.

I dunno...I mean, it's likely gonna stay pretty cheap. It may be worth pegging it.

...if you then really wanted to go original, you could pick up a vintage Slingy tom mount for about what ?.... $100 these days...... and take it from there.

Great cheap gigging set, but it's hard to imagine how the day went when they decided to paint the hoops red.

If he'd painted the hoops black and took the pic from the kick batter side they might have sold for a lot more!

That's not entirely true. This is not a kit that Buddy would have played. Krupa kits from the 60's to 70's would have been the standard 22/16/13 with a snare - a typical four piece affair. The kits that Buddy played were 24/16/16/13 with a snare. Neither of these line up with what is displayed here. I again say that the drums are nice. If all is good with the innerds then one might take a second look...IF you can get over that added tom mount. If you get it cheap enough, you could always remove it and pull the wrap, plug the holes, REwrap, and put it correct. What a pain!!! I agree with Ludwig-Dude, stay away.

They went for £390 - would have been a lot higher if it hadn't been bastardised. Glad I left alone!
