Ha, great chops, great stamina, great career, I suppose there's nothing that will impress guys like you. I've heard similiar complaints about Buddy Rich, who the heck do you like?
Not you, that's for sure, in fact, you're going on my Ignore List permanently as of this moment.
But since you asked: Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts, Keith Moon, Johny Barbata, Jerry Edmonton, Hal Blaine, Kenny Aronoff, Jim Keltner, Kenney Jones, Bobby Elliott, Levon Helm, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Ed Shaughnessy, Carter Beauford, etc. Too many to list.
You want to know what impresses, huh? A drummer who plays MUSIC. A drummer who plays great time, who has a great feel, plays for the song, and doesn't need unnecessary displays of chops to get his or her point across. Maybe you're the type who is impressed by these showy solos, but I'm not, and after 55 years as a working drummer, music journalist and author, I have a pretty set idea of what a real drummer should and shouldn't be.
I used to see guys like you at the Modern Drummer Festival every year, going crazy over the latest flavor of the month drummer and his extended solos. It got so the only performances I enjoyed were the drummers who brought bands with them.
So, knock yourself out with your Carl Palmer solos. You're finished in my book.
