Can You Guys Help Me With A Vintage Sling Purchase?

Loading...

Well, I am hooked. I played my new Hollywood Ace snare (http://www.vintagesnaredrums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3873) today for five hours and it is really a great sounding drum. Good ring, good tone, easy to tune, great rim shots, fab cross sticking ... I love they way it plays and sounds. I can't wait to hear some of the higher end Slingerlands, they must be amazing.

Do any of you know:

-- What snare stand would be appropriate for this guy? Flat based?

-- Is there a vintage case that would go with this student snare?

-- What three piece kit would match up with it, vintage wise?

Do you guys have approximate prices for the above in good to excellent condition?Do you guys use vintage hardware with your stuff, or modern? Finally, if any of you have any of this stuff for sale, please let me know. Thanks! Joey

Prices vary, but generally you won't be looking a price too high. Usually 60s Slingerland 3 pieces never go past $1000 on ebay, even in really nice condition.

Snare stand and case is up to you, neither are important.

Thanks, Michael. Do you know which vintage model in or around 1969 would be the one to look for? I think my drum is somewhere in 66-69. Found these, but they have different color badges and I don't need a 16", would rather have a 14. I wouldn't mind a 12" tom. Not sure so I will keep looking. These do look nice though. Joey

Buddy Rich rejoined Slingerland in 1968 so I believe that would be a Buddy Rich kit, so the snare technically wouldn't match because the snare that came with the kit was 5 x 14. The fade on your drum I think is a little more yellow but I can't tell real well because the drum set picture isn't good quality.

But, I don't think you should worry about getting a matching set. For one I don't know of the specifics of which outfits came with that type of snare drum. But, I do know the snare was always advertised individually with other models for ordering.

It is up to you, it is a great kit for a great price that you would love playing next to your red sparkle DWs.

The only problem is he doesn't mention about the bearing edges. If you can ask him about them before auction closes in 2 hours before the auction closes then great, otherwise you might be taking a gamble. His feedback maybe 99, but there is always that one guy...

Thanks, Michael. You must be a member of Drummerword, aye? Anyway, I missed that auction as I didn't get your suggestion in time. Thanks for your input. I will keep looking over the next month for the correct kit to complete a nice vintage Slingerland kit. And, I thought I had a 5 x 14 snare! Need to get the tape measure out. Joey

Oh yes I am, I didn't want to keep the tacky "smoothjazz" name, but that is what the initials are for so I am not completely unrecognizable. as you can see I just joined as well mainly for one question, but intend to stay.

Oh and yeah you have a 5.5 deep snare, most common snare size then, and, well it said in the auction lol.

A true BR Slingerland set would have had two cymbal mounts on the bass drum from the factory...

One for the ride and one for the splash....

If the set was an actual BR model with the two mounts it would have probably went for more...

It is cataloged as a 22 - 13 - 16 - 16. The snare as mentioned was a

5 1/2 x 14

I forgot to mention that a few months back an actual Slingerland Set like the picture sold for $3800 on Ebay...

I think it even had the hardware, but I do not remember if it had the canister throne...

Hi, Michael. Indeed, nice to see you here. I do see the snare is 5 1/2 ... still sounds nice and looks pretty good. Funny, when I first took it near the other snare, the BB, the thought came to me that it looked bigger, but I quickly forgot about that small issue as I was anxious to start playing it. Needed to use the same snare stand, but I intend to get another, why I have no idea. This hobby just goes and goes through the dough.

Is this the ebay auction you are speaking of David? It is still in my Watching page.

Is the $3,700 a fair price for that kit?

As a matter of fact, I communicated with Marty, the seller of the set, the day before the auction ended. I was just unable to educate myself regarding the set in that short amount of time, so I passed, but I did almost purchase it. I came very close. That same week, there was another one out of San Francisco, but it was not in good condition, if I recall correctly. Hopefully another will come along. Or a simple three piece. Until then, I can use the time to learn about the kits. I would certainly pay $4,000 for a great vintage set, if I was comfortable with what I was doing. Thanks much for that great attachment of the ad. I increased it once opened and find it very useful ... and entertaining.

Here is a snare I almost bought this weekend, with the plan to sell the drum and keep the stand and case. Didn't go for too much, but I don't know. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290193198848&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019

Anyway, thanks again for the replies. Joey
