Can anybody identify this COS (MIJ?) snare?

I am stumped as well. I agree with - not STAR/TAMA and not Pearl. Interesting drum. I`m sure it sounds good from the looks of it.

Here are som more pictures of the muffler, strainers and crimped snarebed. The "but" strainer is missing the adjustment knob. There are no extra holes in the shell so I believe the strainers are original.

cn679: what you see in the first middle picture is the attatchment screw for the muffler. There is no vent hole.

Just a thought about the age of the drum:

Wouldn't it be strange if somebody made a "Clamshell" lookalike strainer in the 70's? I would think "stencil drum" makers would try to make drums that looked like American drums of the same era.

This is turning into quite a mystery....

The early 1970`s did see a lot of 60`s style hardware remaining in the catalogs. I think it wasn`t perceived as "the decade has ended, we now need to change everything" kind of thing- there was an overlap.

The inside nuts and bolts- don`t look Pearl for sure. The strainer looks very common- similar to many - except for that large throw arm. Does it actually say "made in Japan" anywhere on this drum? How heavy is it- you don`t need to weigh it but I am just wondering if it`s thin-shell steel or thick or even COB (unlikely ofcourse) ? I think European Thankssinger

After closer inspection i found a stamp on the strainer that says "JAPAN". I can not find any other marks on the shell and lugs.

The shell is steel, 1mm thick. Approximate weight of the drum including hoops is 3.3kg

Ok, there we have it- MIJ. I noticed that is had no cup washers on the inside- the Pearl steel shell drums that I`ve seen had them. Also the design of the knob for the internal mute is nothing like I`ve seen on old MIJs... The biggest thing is that strange throw off arm. I will just have to keep my eye out for another like it here. There is a brand called "ROYAL" here that was mid 60s. Ofcourse we shouldn`t forget TEISCO- it could be a TEISCO now that I think of it- I will try to check their old catalog pages tonight and report back.

OsakaBop:

As I was reading the current "Del Ray" thread I looked at the pix of your drum:

The lugs on this drum seems identical to the ones on mine so I guess it's quite possible it is a Teisco drum. Du you know if they ever made any metal snares?

Thanks for your input :)

I`m sure they did- this catalog page from Tesico 67 has only a shot of wood snares- I`ll keep looking

This is quote from Wikipedia:

"Drums

Teisco marketed drum sets in limited sizes and configurations during the 1960s, sold under the brand name Del Ray. They were produced by sub-contractors to fill out the company's catalog as a supplier of combo instruments [2], but discontinued after the acquisition by Kawai."

My own opinion is that they look alot like the Olympian brand as well- here is a 67 Olympian:
