Camco LA in Alice Cooper blue

Hi folks,

I started to clean the 1970's Camco that I picked up this week.

Both snare and floor tom cleaned up very nicely and boy to they sound sweet.

The floor tom really sings and produces a resonance which I never heard before, quite spectacular.

It still has a light buzz though which I didn't manage to locate yet. Could it be one of the lug springs. Apparently Camco didn't put felt or foam into them.

Overall, the chrome and wood work is in excellent condition.

Under the lugs, the original color came out but I'm unable to capture the true color with my camera. The original is a light blue but the aged paint has a green-greyisch touch, tending to turquoise. (matches my wallpaper ;) ).

All 4 shells have the number 780 written inside with a red marker,... anybody knows what this means?

Next inline the 12" and 13" toms, I'll keep you posted.

Consider yourself lucky to have a working throwoff on that snare. You found a great Kit !

Thanks guys,

Dennis,... You mean that this type of throw off breaks down a lot ?

It looks and feels pretty sturdy to me.

Something that puzzled me the past 2 days is the hole and the odd looking screw opposite from the badge. It looked factory but I didn't have a clue,... I just found out,... DOH.

Unfortunately the key is missing.

The hole & inside bracket is for a drum key (A very rare key to find). The throw off is a very weak point in the Camco engineering. They frequently have a cracked covering, & generally break down. (don't worry if yours is intact). I've had 5 Brass Camco snares, & 4 of them had broken, or missing throws. The only snare I had that worked was one w/ the simple Budget Strainer. I am still sitting on various fragmented parts of strainers that I accumulated while trying to piece one together. They are hard to find, & expensive.

Stedi - a DW key will fit until you can track down an old Camco key. You'll find the rack toms to be every bit as resonant as the floor tom. If you add rubber air-cushioned feet to the bass drum, (and the floor tom feet,) it will sing as well.

Great kit, great color. Enjoy!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Here's another mind breaker,...

The 12" tom on this kit has 2 extra holes drilled to be seen on the picture below. When I removed the tom mount plate, I noticed that the hole for the mount itself is much bigger than on the 13". It's not visible as the big washer on the inside is hiding it.

Doing some research on the forum, I found out that the 12" tom was probably drilled originally for a Rogers memri-lock. The drilling pattern looks exactly like the creamy tom below.

Why would a 5 piece drumkit come with 2 different tom mounts ?

This would mean that the kit had this 2 extra holes from the day it left the store,...?!

Very weird,...

You will find many vintage drums w/ multiple holes from switching mounting systems. Some systems are poor to begin with, & break down, other systems become fashionable & state of the art, them someone decides to go back to the original. All this can leave many holes.

I bet they will sound great and I can't wait to have them all done,...

Regarding the holes, I've seen much worse than this,... I have in my basement probably 5 vintage American shells drilled for Tama, Pearl, etc...

Hey,... I even have a 20" Ludwig drilled for 3 mounts,... !!!

In this case, there is more to the story than just a couple of extra holes.

I understood that Camco's often came with Rogers hardware because the original hardware wasn't regarded as "high quality" amongst the more demanding drummers.

In the case of the 12" tom, it is drilled for both, Rogers and Camco.

I'm quite sure that this kit came as a 5 piece set so why would the 13" tom be drilled for Camco and the 12" drilled for Rogers to reverse it back to Camco ?

The reason to think that it came as a set is the fact that Camco is extremely rare over here in Belgium Europe so I can't imagine the owner found a 12" tom on the street. Also the idea that the tom was added later is questionable.

First, there is the tom mount for 2 toms, second, the positioning of the badge on the 13". If it came as a 3-piece set, the badge would have been on the wrong side or the original owner would have been a lefty.

Maybe a mix up in the factory when they dispatched the kit.

Again, I live in Belgium and Camco was and is a very rare bird over here. Everything would have been custom ordered from the factory in the US so a factory screw up sounds most plausible.

All input is highly appreciated.
