Burgundy Sparkle/ReWrap Dilemma

Loading...

From RogerSling

No respector of vintage drums would ever do that ... consciously.

I know, I know.

I appriciate that...they'll be red. Where do I get the sparkle closest to what I need?

Are you talking about Red sparkle?? Precision and all the other companies will have matches for the Red sparkle you can get a free swatch kit from precision drum co. Seriously someone somewhere needs that bass drum and they may have a bass drum shell for you? I'm just saying if your going to re wrap a perfectly good drum due to color that is a Royal No No!!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I think this is crazy!

You wanted a kit in Burgundy Sparkle, because you like that wrap. Good, hold on to that. It is no seen to often, and you like it.

Now, some guy suggested you sell your the drums you have, add the money you would spend on restoring the shells and buy what what you want.

All very well - but how many Burgundy Sparkle kits have you seen - and what did they cost?

Next thing, somebody suggests it is heresy that you rip off the wrap of a solo bass drum in a pretty common colour, and use that together with 2 already naked drums you have.

Expressions laden with big feelings are used, and we understand doing what you wanted is quite akind to rape or murder or both at the same time. The stake where you are going to end your miserable life is all ready.

So, now you have been pressed into wrapping your 2 toms in a coating, that you didn´t really want - for the case of what? Originality? No, these tom won´t be "original" anyway. Never.

If "preservation" and "originality" should have any meaning, the good advice would be - "Sell that bassdrum, buy a naked one instead. You are not going to use the wrap, why destroy it, taking it off. There are lots of naked Ludwigs around."

If the shell you can find is without hardware - take off the lugs and so on from yours, or they will cost you the same amount as the nose of an F-18.

And all the screamers can then put their wallets where their mouths are - and buy your bass drum, at that premium price they maintain originality deserves. This should leave you with loose change after buying your naked shell.

This would allow YOU to PRESERVE both drum and your ORIGINAL dream - namely a kit in Burgundy Sparkle.

And - if noone will buy a lone bassdrum shell in red sparkle, it is because it is not very interesting to preserve. Then, you must be morally free to do what you want to it - strip the thing and recoat it in the finish you want.

Regards

Jon

Jeeeez. Didn't mean to cause so much drama. Sorry.

Mostly, I really dig the fact that i found the BD on the street. It's mine and it's gonna be killer. I'm NOT SELLING IT.

I wanted to switch the finish because:

A) I wanted a burgundy sparkle kit, and I'll never afford an original.

B) Red sparkle is, as you said, "not very interesting to preserve." (To me anyway.)

The catch is, ultimately, that I've come to agree that what is most important in this matter is to maintain the integrity of the drum.

THAT'S IT. I'M OVER IT.

Can't wait to have a red sparkle 3 ply Ludwig kit.

I appreciate your support, Jon.

The burgundy sparkle will go on something else, someday...maybe my '41 top hat & cane drums???

Fish I agree just the fact alone you found the bass on the street for free is very cool! Whatever path you choose......do what makes you happy and enjoy them. That's all that really matters.

Hey bud,

You did nothing wrong. These gents merely offered opinions. Nothing more. This is a vintage drum history site. Most of us (with a few outlying variables) think along the vintage history lines. That's pretty much what is spoken here. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong. It just 'is'.

If this were an Imported Beer Appreciation site, I'm sure the passion would be slanted in that direction. No big.

You take what any person says with a grain of salt. Always follow your own leading.
