BR 4x14 Tribute Drum

It's all done! I had posted this a few weeks back, but not in the Image Gallery. Since those pictures were taken, I've added a beautiful set of new COB Stick Chopper hoops, 12 of 16 Slingerland late 60's tension rods (the other 4 new generic rods are positioned where you won't really see them), short lug nuts and a new set of brass German wires. The end result looks beautiful and sounds great!

I've wanted one of these BR snare drums for a long time, but wanted it to match my 1967 kit in Sparkling Silver Pearl. Even finding a COW version would cost way too much and the condition would be questionable, so I had this shell built to my specs and drilled for the lugs. I drilled for the rest of the hardware and air vent. Many thanks to the wonderful VDF members who offered their views AND to TommyP for his very positive outlook with my project!

I'll be posting a few more pictures, showing the metamorphosis of my BR 4x14.

Stick choppers add some mojo to that drum. I love it!

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I enjoyed reading the thread regarding the construction of this drum. Those stick choppers look great on that drum. Kind of funny going from stick savers to stick choppers (just the names, not the reality). What a great looking drum and a labor of love.

Absolute beauty! That drum looks SPOT ON Slingerland! Actually, better... as your attention to detail and QC is flawless. EXCELLENT!! I know you know this of course, but some may not: StickChoppers are CORRECT, as that is how all the early production models were built... just like Buddy's! Absolute BEAUTY Mark!

The COB Stick Chopper hoops were purchased from drumfactorydirect.com

The all-maple Keller shell was supplied by Andy Foote, of Drum Supply House. If memory serves me, the shell is 8-ply with 6-ply re-rings. Picture attached showing the plies. DSH also wrapped the shell in Silver Sparkle and put the overlap seam where I requested... between two lugs, directly under the butt. This is where Slingerland put most of their overlap seams, although each BR snare drum appears to be done differently!

The Black/Brass badge was obtained online and the serial number of 135xxx matches those of my other drums. What were the odds?! The grommet is aluminum, of the style that Slingerland was using at the time.

As Tommyp points out, the StickChoppers are correct for this drum and actually look better, IMHO, than Stick Savers for this snare drum. At first, I did like the Stick Savers, but as soon as I installed the "Choppers", it really gave the drum a killer look! The Stick Savers are back on the Artist snare drum and I won't have to keep swapping hoops!

When time permits, I'll set up my Slingerland kit with the BR snare drum and post pictures.
