i did try to search for this topic prior to posting but couldnt find one,
i use/like remo coated ambass. heads on my toms and have always used them on top and bottom, is that standard or typical ? to use same head on both ends, i just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing out on something by doing so
i see were calling the top side "batter" what are we calling the bottom side ?

The bottom side is called the resonant or reso side...Coated ambs are warm sounding heads that are quite durable...There is nothing wrong with using them on both sides...If that`s the sound you after, then, you nailed it!!
What brand(s) of drums do you play?
For my vintage Ludwigs, I like coated emperors for bats and coated ambs for resos...

i had a 60's MIJ (no badge) gold sparkle kit w/ 22" bass drum which is what i used the remos i mentioned on, band broke up & i couldnt play them where i lived then so i sold them, now i have a 60's MIJ stewart blue sparkle kit w/ a 20" bass drum and a new house where i can play anytime so pretty pumped about that
Cool set!! Blue sparkle is my favorite sparkle wrap...
I use Evans G2`s for bats and G1`s for resos on my Stewart peacock pearl set...I like the sound with that combo...

Nothing wrong with your setup. For an inexpensive trial. I ordered some clear Attack reso heads for my MIJ (luan) kit. I liked it. Try one on a Tom and see if you want to experiment.

I know - experimenting with different heads is expensive - as heads cost twice as much as they used to "back in the day".
For the longest time I used clear ambassadors (Remo) top and bottom. I bought a kit that had Ambbies on it, but the batters were coated. They had life left in them so I just left them on. Eventually I grew to like that better than the clear batters, so now my standard (and I would bet that MOST drummers do this) coated amb batters, clear amb resos. I find no need to warm them up any more than that, considering that I have always (at least the last 15-20 years) used Studio rings on my toms.
Nothing wrong with using coated "batter" heads underneath! That's my favorite recipe for a lot of drums & sounds nice and warm (as Grantro mentioned). I particularly like this for MIJ kits. Sometimes when this doesn't sound right on a kit (to my ears of course) I use those semi-clear textured EC2 heads, which also sound very warm underneath.
I just saw a drummer play a '61 Ludwig with Coated Diplomat batters with clear Pinstripe resos. I thought the combo was weird at first glance, but they sounded really nice; very punchy, but with a certain crispness.
