Boston 10 lug snare

Loading...

Yes, I stumbled across the kit last Sunday and couldn't believe it was incomplete minus the snare, which I already had. So I bought the kit as soon as I could. It is in very good condition and has just been sitting in a back room hardly played for the last ten years plus.

I'm gradually cleaning her up. I polished up the 12" tom last night which came up quite well. It was quite good to begin with though.

There are kits available new as "Boston" but they're nothing like this old kit which I think must have been made in the Tama factory because some of the hardware, lugs and things look identical to some Star drums I have seen pictures of.

Yes, I'd agree that it looks more like early Tama than early Pearl. Great kit you got there.

I'm planning on re-wrapping my 2nd Cortley stencil kit in WMP. To explain, my first Cortley kit now belongs to my nephew. After a couple year hiatus from drumming, I was recruited to join a blues band, but didn't own a kit. I went into a Boston music store to try and find an inexpensive used kit, and there to my astonishment, was a silver (not sparkle) Cortley kit which appeared to be the same vintage as my first kit.

Needless to say, they went home with me that day - It was like an omen or something. That was the 2nd and only other Cortley kit I've seen in person, to this day!! The kit came with the no-name 10 lug snare I mentioned earlier. I think I paid about $100.00 - $150.00 for the kit. No cymbals of course.

Anyhoo... that 2nd kit will be WMP in the future, once I finish all of my Kent drum projects. So many drums... so little time :)

I'd like to see some pics of the Cortley, have any?

I have another little project building a kit from three luan shells 12x8, 14x14 , 20x14. I'd like to wrap it in red or silver sparkle which works out to be around $300 Australian Dollars including postage from JamSm. Is that a good place to get wrap from?

I polished up the floor tom on the Boston a bit today, it had some corrosion around the inside of the rim (see pic). It was down to steel in a few places but I managed to remove about 80% of that mess.

I wouldn't call the finish WMP, its more of an opal finish, or perhaps I'm not familiar enough with marine pearl variations like below from a drum wrap company?

Heres a pic of the inside of the shell, and bearing edges:

Looks pretty good here. Pity about the chrome. I'm used to dealing with that on the Kent drums I've worked on. Their rims were cheaply made - Thin with a minimal amount of chrome. I've replaced a couple which were beyond hope with some nice 2.3 mm super hoops from drummaker.com. They are 110% better than the original Kent hoops.

I've not dealt with Jammin Sam, but that's where I plan on getting the WMP wrap for the Cortley set. There has been a lot of discussion about how to properly re-wrap a kit. With the older US made kits, the entire wrap was glued to the shell. With Ludwigs, they even tucked the wrap into the seam of the shell.

With most of the import kits, the wrap is usually glued/taped down at the seam only. This was the case with both of my Cortley kits.

Both methods have their good and bad points. For me, I'm perfectly happy with the import method of gluing at the seam, as it allows you to remove the wrap quite easily if you later decide to rewrap again. The only downside I've seen with the import style wrap method is, if the drum is exposed to high heat (say, leaving the drum in a very hot car, baking in the sun), the wrap can bubble up and distort at the lugs.

Yes, it actually happened to the silver Cortley kit, which is why I decided to re-wrap it, but I should have known better in the first place. NEVER leave a drum of any kind, in severe cold or heat. DOH!!!

The reason your wrap looks different from the WMP sample you posted is due to age. The older wraps were subject to fading and discoloration due to time, the sun, etc... New wrap supposedly does not do this. My champagne sparkle Kent set left the factory as a silver sparkle set. 40 years or so have caused the base color of the wrap to darken, leaving the color more of a tan. The actual sparkles seem to change as well as they appear more of a golden color now. I was stunned the first time I removed a lug and saw the original color.

With the older WMP, the wrap tends to yellow with age, which is what you are seeing on your Boston kit I believe. Pull one of the leg mounts off the floor tom and you should see a much whiter color to the wrap.

I will likely go with the Vintage Marine Pearl from jamminsam, but every time I browse the site, I think "hmmm... that gold sparkle is pretty nice too" - LOL!!!

I think the only pics I had of the old Cortley kit are long gone and the silver kit was totally boring to begin with. Hopefully, I can start on the Cortley kit soon... I just need to stop buying those damn Kents!!!

Well it definitely came out of the Tama/Star factory. Have a look at the similiarities in this Star kit on eBay.

Yep - I'd have to agree that they came out of the same factory. Offset teardrops on the tom, rail on the kick, etc... Cool!!

You have an early Tama set - Something to be proud of.

Yeah!... those are pretty sharp looking drums... course I am a SUCKER for WMP, it's actually all I own for a wrap on my sets and snares... course it WAS Buddy's color of choice too, and seeing how ALL my drums/snares are BR models... but already I digress. Sorry. Anyway...

The wrap on this Boston/Tama set is certainly WMP! There are many different "shades" of WMP as well. Each company had their own "tint" if you will. It's true that only one company made all the wrap back in the day, and that may still be true, but having said that, each drum company could and did have wrap made specifically for them, and there were color differences in the WMP for sure, as well as the size of the "flake" as well. I have snares/sets from three different companies that BR endorsed and all of the WMP was a different shade, even though each company called it WMP... plus ... over time WMP is notorious for shading/fading/yellowing, and each companies WMP changes in a slightly different direction! I have drums representing WFL... Rogers ... Slingerland, and Ludwig... and all of them have "yellowed" differently unique to the company. So...

The wrap on your drums looks a lot like "Antique WMP" that is available today... but ... that is always tricky as pics of WMP be it with or without flash are hard to get an ideal match on, unless you have the drum and the wrap sitting right there together. Still...

NICE DRUMS!!! I love the look of them too. The WMP has a nice color to it!!

Hi,

... Boston ... never heard of ..

I like to add that my 60s Imperial Star 'KingBeat' snare drum has exactly the same lugs (and also 10 pieces of it) as the Boston snare drum ... Furtheron the holes of the damper in the Boston snare drum show exactly the same figure as when I would take the damper knob (Star called it: 'one touch tone control', see pic 2) off my snare drum. Attached please find two pics showing the lugs of my Star snare drum.

I also guess, that Boston and Star are from the same family tree then: the later Tama brand.

Just looked at an Apollo kit tonight with those same lugs and offset. Sadly, the kit was trashed and I had to walk away. The Apollos were satin flame, but otherwise very similar to your Boston kit.
