Any creative uses for this busted shell..???

I was given a 22" bass drum shell that is cracked from using too big a shell mounted cymbal on it.

It there a use for this shell?? The fellow who gave it to me knew that it matched my Krupa kit and thought maybe it would handy to have a shell with matching wrap laying around..

Side note on the vintage drum community: very nice of him to think of me, we had corresponded some time ago over an ebay purchase and he was cleaning some stuff out, had this shell, and made the effort to contact me.

Well....it's really a candidate for a rewrap job....repair the crack/damage and give it new skin. Other than that, I dunno.

I have cut down the depth of shells before to remove cracks....like making a 10" deep bass drum, and adding a new re-ring to the new aperture/edge, etc.; but it looks like the damage is too close to center to do that.

Slingy wraps are too glued-on to try a wrap salvage/removal in order to save the matching wrap finish...so that'd be a disastrous attempt...

how bad is the crack on the inside? You can put a re-ring in the middle to reinforce it. Looks like a nice shell, I was thinking about putting a kit together out of mahogany shells. Do you want to give it up?

Thanks

Lucky... it didn't just crack, the washers actually pulled through the shell and out through the wrap, seperating the plys on the way through... so the damage extends all the way out to one set of lugs sideways and about two inches above the cymbal mount... it's pretty toasted.

The recommendation from the gentleman that gave it to me was to use a table saw and cut the rings off both sides of the shell and save them.. you're right they are in great shape. Then keep some part of the shell for plugs and patches should I ever need them on my other kit.

I've been thinking I'd really like to try to make it into an 18" shell... Have you messed with shells much.. is it possible to cut out a piece of the shell and compress it into a small circle??

I have messed with shells and have steam bent a ot of wood, I am actually going to bend a piece of redwood for a job we are doing in a little bit. You can try making it into an 18" shell although it stands a good chance to be out of round. The shell would be more forgiving than the re-rings. What about an inlayed patch on the inside? I have done that to get rid of holes from the bigger tom mounts.

You can put a patch on the inside and it will be fine for playing. If the wrap is not all glued down you can peel it back to where the damage is and push back into place the damaged area and glue with an epoxy or yellow or brown carpenters glue. After it's dry, you can cut a triangular piece of 1/4" ply (luan would match for color) in the shape of a Yield sign (triangle with rounded edges) glue with epoxy or the carpenters glue I mentioned, clamp or weight down overnight. Repair wrap with duct tape on the inside and reglue wrap. For the crack in the wrap (clean area of damage) you can get blue sparkle nail polish close to the color and filling in where there are splits, cracks and chips. Re-drill any holes for the mount, get longer screws and you're done! Good as new (almost!) :)

Yeah, that too. Ihave a 20" slingerland shell, probably around 1966 or 67. It has the chocolate milk interrior. Drilled for rail mount and cymbal mount. No extra holes, want to trade?

No, its white satin flame, at least whats left of it. A perfect candidate for a rewrap. I'll remove all of it and have it ready for you. Not a bad trade for a busted shell.
