Another Mystery Drum -

I got in touch with Pearl for a final clear up. This is what Al told me - Hi Jay - I can tell from the BB3 bass drum mount that it is our shell. However the inside (if it were fiberglass or even fiberwood) did not look like that. It would have been clean and looked more like the drum below.....

So I'm not really note sure.

Wow, the info gurus at Pearl have missed again...

That is the current w/fg model. There was also a late version in the early 80s that had maple shells and tidy looking fg like this.

However, the drum pictured at top is indeed the 70s w/fg version. Jeesh, the drum you pictured in the OP is not drilled for a BB3 block. The drilling is for the mid-70s tom mounting block and that looks to be a 10x14 tom, not a BD!

(I am 100% positive about this - I have owned and restored them.)

Pearl's "historian" wing should be the final word on such matters, but they are a bit too sloppy for that to be the case. I too got innaccurate info fom Pearl regarding my President set. They take a fair stab at it, but at a certain point they say "close enough," even when they aren't even close.

Ya know what's interesting. After he sent that response I replied with the link you had sent me. When I first laid eyes on this kit I said Pearl. The guy I was buying from said no, they were smooth etc... Ok maybe I wasn't right on the Pearl guess. Everyone I asked since said the same, yet it didn't make sense to me that anyone would just add fiberglass to their drums. Aside from having them vibra-fibed. I pulled the whole kit out as I'm going to bring it back to life. And I stand by you, and my very first thought back in May. This is a '70s Pearl. I was greatly misinformed and clang to that ledge until well, there wasn't nothing left, lol

Seems my first thought was wrong, and I'm going back to these aren't Pearl ( at least not all ) Here is why ( and photos will be listed in the restoration area )

1. - Both floor toms have different size leg brackets, and I don't seem to have a single one that fits ( Including Pearl,Tama,Ludwig,MIJ's ) And it doesn't appear that any holes were plugged or added.

2. - The 14" toms interior is odd, very odd. For one the fiberglass doesn't go top to bottom but rather leaves about 1/4" top and bottom. And to boot, it has a clear seam where it appears to have been wrapped inside the drum. The 13",22",18",20" are all smooth, top to bottom with no seam.

I'm inclined to believe that some of these are Pearl, and some may not be. The four mentioned with smooth seamless interiors I think are Pearl. Yet the spacing for the floor tom bracket on the 18" has me thrown.

The 16" & 14" having different interiors makes me think someone maybe had some Pearl shells and had them done to match? I'd be hard pressed to think pearl had a seam inside any shell.

The plot, she has thickened... lol
